Dear Families,

We look forward to seeing you this Sunday.

Music Connections will not meet this week. See you back again on February 1. Children are invited to stay in worship to support TRUFunction.

Our Youth Lock-In Event this Friday has a new end-time: 6:30-10:30 p.m. Please see below!

Please read on below for more detailed information about this Sunday and other upcoming opportunities.

Nursery Care 8:30-11:30 AM

Nursery Care with Avery and Jade is available for children 6 months to 5 years old in the Frances Room.

Peace Circle (PreK-5th Grade) 9:00-9:50 AM:

Children in PreK-5th Grade will meet in the Ruby Bridges Room. This week, the children will hear the story, “Jubilee,” which focuses on text from Leviticus 25. Following the story, the children will be invited to explore the story deeper through a game, coloring, art, and sand play. Josie G. and Jadyn G. will lead the children in the experience.

This week, Middle School & High School will combine and will gather in the Dorothy Day room. This group will be using “Teen Text,” a progressive Christian Bible study resource that guides teens to reflect together in discussion on the lectionary scripture texts associated with each Sunday. Gretchen F. and Al. B. will guide the group in this discussion.

Youth Lock-In “Lite”

January 23, 6:30-10:30 p.m.

In response to some feedback, and in light of the cold weather, we are changing the end time of our event to 10:30 p.m. We will plan to hold the event even if MMSD cancels school on Friday. Please use your best judgement if for any reason you feel unsafe traveling out in the cold!

This is a joint event with our friends at Madison Mennonite Church for youth from both of our congregations! Youth in 7th grade – high school are eligible to join in the fun. There will be games, food and time just to hang out, have fun and get to know one another. Please indicate your interest with this form.

At ORUCC, We Are Committed to Justice

Driven by a desire from some of our youth to do something in response to the violence being perpetrated by ICE in Minneapolis, we encourged members of our congregation to create origami cranes and hearts. Many pieces included prayers and words of hope and encouragement for recipients to discover. These origami hearts and cranes will be sent to Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis, where a violent ICE raid took place this month, as a show of our support and solidarity with their community. This school has ties to our congregation, where ORUCC member Sara Hagen’s brother-in-law serves as the principal. We want to send our hopes for peace and justice while we show the community at Roosevelt High that they are not alone!

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, try this song as your prayer practice around the dinner table or at bedtime. (Sing to the tune of Michael, Row Your Boat Ashore)

Once there was a man named King, Alleluia;

They called him Martin Luther King, Alleluia

King was wise and he was good, Alleluia

He believed in brotherhood, Alleluia

He had a dream for you and me, Alleluia

He knew that all must be free Alleluia

The freedom road is weary and long Alleluia

But Martin sang a freedom song, Alleluia

We must keep the dream alive, Alleluia

Freedom’s song can never die, Alleluia

Once there was a man named King Alleluia

They called him Martin Luther King, Alleluia
