Faith in Action Brunch

Sunday, February 11, 2024

11:15am – 12:45pm

Friendship Hall

What is this about, you ask? It’s a wonderful opportunity to:

  - Gather as a community & enjoy a meal together

  - Inspire new connections

  - Learn about and raise up our individual and collective outreach and justice work within and beyond ORUCC

  - Support our youth! Proceeds will go toward the 2024 Youth Service Trip

  - Have fun!

Individuals, families, little children – all are invited to partake in this gathering. There will be a dedicated seating area for families with young children and one of our nursery staff will be available to assist you.

Your presence at this brunch is the most important contribution that you can make. If you can also make a donation toward the 2024 Youth Service Trip, in any amount, we will be grateful.

Suggested guidelines are:

Ages 13 and above: $10

Ages 6-12: $5

Ages 5 and under: $0

For Children & Youth – February 11th

Nursery Care opens at 8:30. Jade and Marie are ready to play with your little one.

Sunday School starts at 9 am. PreK-1 children are invited to sing with Julie in the William Johnson room from 9:00-9:15. After the music, Jen and Josie will guide the children in a story about one of Jesus’ miracles.

The 2-5 grade classroom will begin their study of the season of Lent. This week, the children will prepare for Ash Wednesday by exploring the calendar to discover why Lent begins next week, feeling the ashes from last year’s palms, and a brief discussion about entering the season of remembering, reflection, and repentance. Stations will include sand, coloring, journaling, puzzles, and the creation of a lenten intention/promise. At the request of the children, their time together will end with a guided meditation. Joanna and Paul will guide the children in their learning.

This week the children will begin the 10 o’clock hour in the sanctuary with you. When they are dismissed for Music Connections, we will move to the downstairs Bonhoeffer Room for movement and songwriting. On 1/7, the children organically began the process of writing a song (this was 100% initiated by the children!) We’ll revisit that work and continue the process. Kate Mackey will be our Safe Sanctuary volunteer.

Save The Date! February 25, the children are invited to share their composition during worship. Those participating need to attend Music Connections at least two out of the three upcoming Sundays: February 4, 11, and 18. Please note your child’s availability here: https://forms.gle/qxVmUyz5o2zog7Mo8

Older Youth:

This Sunday, 2/11, we will not have regular Sunday School for youth at 9:00 a.m. CWS is putting on a “Faith in Action Brunch” after worship, and the donation proceeds from this brunch will go toward supporting our Youth Service Trip!

Anyone who is available at 9:00 a.m. to help CWS set up is welcome. After worship at 11:00, youth are strongly encouraged to attend the event and participate in the table conversations. CWS has asked that youth attending the service trip stay after the brunch to help clean up

TRU Function will still practice from 10:00-12:00. Any TRU Function youth who are also attending the Service trip are asked to stop into the kitchen after practice to pitch in with the cleanup effort.

The following week, we have some fun and meaningful all-church events coming up as we head into the Lenten season:

  • Tuesday 2/13 Party Gras
  • Wednesday 2/14 Ash Wednesday Service 6:30-7 p.m. and Labyrinth Walk (open 5:00-8:00 p.m.)

FEBRUARY COMPASSION OFFERING

Porchlight, Inc - Safe Haven Program

Safe Haven is a Madison-based day shelter for adults with mental illness who are experiencing homelessness. Guests have access to meals, showers, laundry, bus tickets, mail, and phone services. Safe Haven also provides housing-focused case management and crisis stabilization services. Safe Haven staff specialize in building rapport with individuals who may not otherwise engage in mainstream services.

Safe Haven provides invaluable support through its Crisis Stabilization Program, which focuses on developing and maintaining recovery plans for guests experiencing acute crises. All eligible guests have been diagnosed with a severe and persistent mental illness, and 43% are also struggling with a co-occurring substance use disorder.

Safe Haven’s daily utilization has increased significantly over the past several years, more than doubling from 2018 (198 guests) to 2020 (467 guests). As one of the few community programs for this population that kept its doors open, utilization continued to increase throughout the pandemic. In 2023, Safe Haven served 602 guests during the day. Of those guests, 41% were unsheltered – sleeping in a place not meant for human habitation, and 55% were sleeping in an emergency shelter at night.

With skyrocketing costs and increased guest usage at Safe Haven, Porchlight is in need of additional funding to support these services. Your generous contribution will go directly toward guest services at the day shelter as well as transitional housing support, specifically for individuals with mental illness.
