From Racial Justice Mission Team:

learn about white christian nationalism

White christian nationalists are claiming to speak for Christians when they attack racial diversity, LGBTQ rights, abortion, and election results. ORUCC member Rev. Dr. David Anderman will address the challenges of white christian nationalism with a guest sermon on February 12 and an eight-week study group on Tuesday mornings 10:30-12 from February 28-April 18. The study group will be hybrid (in person and virtual on Zoom) in the Swan seminar room at ORUCC. The Racial Justice Mission Team has been discussing this issue for over a year and we think it is time to bring it to the congregation. We asked David to write a statement about this issue for the ORUCC website.

We are grateful for the ministry of Jeanne Moberly who is a member of Adult Faith Formation, as she puts together a set of fresh readings every week for our devotional practice at Orchard Ridge UCC. You will see these posted daily if you are part of the “Members & Friends” Facebook group. If you know someone who needs encouragement and would like the devotional mailed to them, please contact Julie Wombacher in the church office.

February Compassion Offering

Worker Justice Wisconsin

Worker Justice Wisconsin (WJW) is a Madison-based nonprofit that builds collective worker power together with faith and labor allies. Our worker center educates and empowers employees who do not have a union. We help them file complaints with state agencies, incubate worker-owned cooperatives, and train workers to organize their coworkers. With a mostly bilingual staff, WJW pays special attention to the Spanish-speaking, immigrant working class. In 2022, WJW trained 140 workers, helped recover $121,560.11 in previously owed but unpaid wages, organized two job sites, and incubated three cooperatives. Of the 200+ workers who opened cases in 2022, over 90% were immigrants, and 89% were Latinx.

February’s Compassion Offering will be deposited in the WJW Solidarity Fund. The Fund encourages workers to engage in job site organizing by providing a basic financial safety net. If a worker is retaliated against or fired by their employer for engaging in legally protected organizing activity, or if a workforce decides to go on strike, they can receive up to 50% of their income from the fund (so long as funds last and up to two months). The Fund is crucial to bolstering workers’ bargaining power. It is not charity. It is a direct contribution to workers’ struggle to overcome structural inequality.

Immigration Justice News

Sign welcome cards for asylum seekers

after worship on Sunday, February 12

The Immigration justice team invites you to join them after worship on Sunday, February 12th, to sign welcome cards for asylum seekers newly arrived in the United States. Ruthanne Landsness, our chair, will take the cards with her and share them with asylum seekers as she welcomes them at Casa Alitas, the immigrant welcome center in Tucson, AZ.

Ruthanne will be volunteering at Casa Alitas during February and March 2023. Casa Alitas provides a warm welcome, food, shelter, and travel arrangements for asylum seekers who have been granted temporary parole into the United States.

The team will provide both blank cards for your own personal message, or cards with text (in Spanish) for you to sign. Please come and extend a welcome from ORUCC to these new arrivals to our country.

Movie Group Returns to Oakwood Village

Friday, Feb. 10, 7:00 pm

Join us to Watch the Film: “CODA” With Discussion to Follow

Our November showing was so successful we are returning to Oakwood Village to watch CODA (Child Of Deaf Adults) a 2021 coming-of-age film set in Gloucester, Mass. The movie won three Academy Awards- Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay. The film explores the struggles of 17 year old Ruby Rossi, the only hearing person in her fishing business family. Ruby faces the moral dilemma of going away to college to further her passion for singing, knowing that may mean abandoning her family and their livelihood.

Much to enjoy and discuss in this film. We will meet at the Oakwood Village Arts Center at 7:00 on Friday, February 10th and, following the film, meet in the Sun Room for a discussion. Contact Baxter Richardson, [email protected], Doug Loving [email protected], or Steve Sheets, erab1958 @icloud.com Movie Group coordinators with any questions.

Parking made easy. Enter Oakwood Village at the Island Drive traffic signal, immediately make a right turn and you’ll find yourself at the auditorium parking area on your left. That’s where we need to be. Walk up the sidewalk and enter.

Party Gras is back!

Join us on Tuesday, Feb 21, 5-7 pm, for ORUCC’s unique Mardi Gras celebration. There will be pizza, games, and a short service to bless the burning of last year’s palms.
