    CAR DONATION

The Car Donation Mission Team is pleased to announce that we have donated a Toyota Sienna minivan to an Afghan family of eight. This was a genuine cooperative effort among many partners. First, many thanks to Paul and Jennifer Eggerling-Boeck who generously donated their van. This was their second car donation, by the way. Our partner in determining a suitable Afghan family is the First Baptist Church/Bethany United Methodist Church Refugee and Immigration Ministry. This ministry has working relationships with five Afghan families in the Allied neighborhood. This ministry also provided significant financial support for bringing the van to A1 condition. Finally, many thanks to Scott McGettigan, the owner of Turn Two Auto in Verona. Scott donated significant time to the upgrading of the donated van. Scott is also the son of Orchard Ridge member Judy McGettigan.

The five Afghan families will all benefit from the use of this van since the recipient is the only English speaker in the five families and plays a key role in helping the other families transition to independence. While all the dads are employed, the moms do not drive, so organizing shopping trips, school and other appointments, and simply getting around can be challenging.

If you have comments or questions about either the Afghan families or the car donation program, call or email Baxter Richardson.

    BUILDING ACCESS

As many of you know, we’ve kept a key to the church “hidden” outside the building for many years. We want to be more secure about our building, at this time. We are placing a key in a combination lock box near the same place as the “hidden key”. If you need access to the code, please contact any of the pastors, the moderators, or Jon Blanchard.

Moderators and Ministry chairs should already have a key to use the building as needed for meetings, but if you are a leader of a group who uses the building often, please get in touch with Julie W in the office to arrange for a key. Thanks for keeping our building safe!

    July Compassion Offering

    Casa Alitas

Casa Alitas is a non-profit, immigrant welcome center in Tucson, Arizona. The Center provides a warm welcome, food, clothing, shelter for a few days, medical care, assistance in reuniting families who have been separated at the border, and then assistance for these families with transportation to sponsors who await them in the United States.

ORUCC has a hands-on history with Casa Alitas, even though it is miles away. You may remember that we sponsored a wonderfully successful clothing drive in 2021, and are planning another for this August.

Funds from the compassion offering will be used to provide direct services to immigrant families. For example, it will help reunite families who have been separated at the border, to buy plane tickets for people to reach the homes of their sponsors in the United States, and to pay for the food, medical supplies, and shelter provided by Casa Alitas.

Thank you in advance for your contribution.

    Associate Pastor Search

Update from the Search Committee for the Associate Pastor of Children, Youth, and Families and Tammy’s Transition Team

Last month, the search committee had a candidate interview with them and the pastors, but that person ultimately took another position as a solo lead pastor of a church. We are committed to and trust this pastoral search process. Many thanks to the search committee for their loving, steadfast work and may they feel our deep gratitude as they continue their search.

As Tammy shared in her note to the congregation on June 23, Julie Mazer will step up as our Interim Education Coordinator to coordinate and oversee Sunday morning programming for children and youth. Julie will work with Tammy beginning in mid-July to ensure a smooth transition. Additionally, Kristen Muckian will lead a team for the annual mission trip. As an adult chaperone of this trip for seven years, Kristen is well-equipped to plan next summer’s trip. Thank you Julie and Kristen!

    News for Covid Response Team

The COVID Response Team met Sunday, June 5th, and decided not to change anything, but to hold steady where we are. Positive test rates in Dane County are up currently, which we are watching.

We continue to recommend that masks be required during worship, in order to extend the broadest welcome to all. For small groups that use the church outside of the worship service, they may continue to work with the pastors to make the best determination for their group.

We are starting to digest the new COVID metrics that have become publicly available, and to consider how they might guide our decision-making in the future.

While the recommendations continue to evolve, we reiterate that by wearing even a non-fitted N95 mask – freely available outside Worship Hall – the wearer essentially ensures that nobody can be considered a “close contact” during worship. (It would take hours of continuous exposure to an unmasked individual for this to be the case!) This frees us from the need to be concerned with “contact tracing,” etc. if any of our friends test positive for COVID — although we do appreciate being able to pray for them during Joys & Concerns. Please keep telling us when you test positive for COVID after being in worship or at a church function.

AT ORUCC, the Members are the Ministers!

We are seeking volunteers to serve on Sunday mornings for in-person worship. You need not be a member,

    All are welcome!
Please join us even if this is your first time!

Jim McNamara writes: Jill and I attended the Family Camp at Moon Beach this year which was led by Winton and Tammy Boyd. The focus of the week was on naming; what does our name mean and how do we (and others) see it in the daily in-and-out routines of our lives. One of our exercises during the week was “writing” a poem based on the example of the poem “Where I’m From” by
George Ella Lyon, which I have copied below:
    Where I’m From
    I am from clothespins,
    from Clorox and carbon-tetrachloride.
I am from the dirt under the back porch.
    (Black, glistening,
    it tasted like beets.)
I am from the forsythia bush
    the Dutch elm
    whose long-gone limbs I remember
as if they were my own.
    I’m from fudge and eyeglasses,
              from Imogene and Alafair.
    I’m from the know-it-alls
              and the pass-it-ons,
from Perk up! and Pipe down!
I’m from He restoreth my soul
              with a cottonball lamb
and ten verses I can say myself.
I’m from Artemus and Billie’s Branch,
    fried corn and strong coffee.
From the finger my grandfather lost
     to the auger,
the eye my father shut to keep his sight.
Under my bed was a dress box
    spilling old pictures,
    a sift of lost faces
    to drift beneath my dreams.
    I am from those moments–
    snapped before I budded —
    leaf-fall from the family tree.
We were each given a page with a blank outline for doing our own “Where I’m From” poem and given forty-five minutes to try to complete it. Some did, others didn’t – but we all were very moved by the experience. I thought it might be interesting to look into our own backgrounds and influences and to see what (and where) this could take us. What we found at camp was that even when we completed our poem, there was always the desire to go back and revise or extend it. So, this could be an exercise to keep us interested over our August hiatus from Java and Jesus.

Here is my poem from camp:
    Jim’s poem from camp
    I am from Downers Grove
    from books and slide rules
I am from always unfinished completeness
and the eternal scraping of paint
I am from towering elms over the street
whose shade and protection reassure me
I am from the big bad brown teddy bear
and the room full of train tracks
    from VanHorn and Stuart
I am from calm analysis and stony strength
    and from constant loving care
    from tenacious, obstinate persistence
I am from quiet under the rafters high
I am from Jenny VanCycle and Neil McNamara
from very dead liver and mushy brussel sprouts
from an escape from too many sisters and Ireland
and from valley farms in Idaho and Washington
from long trips in the back of a station wagons
I am from those moments surrounded in love
    and always in unfinished completeness.

Before our session on July 31st, please write your own poem using this blank poem form, and come prepared to share your poem with the group. If you don’t have a chance to write your own poem, come anyway, and enjoy the poems of others.

    From Racial Justice

    Christian Nationalism

Some members of the racial justice mission team have been studying Christian nationalism. In its extreme version, it is the belief that the United States should be run as a White Christian nation. Its milder version includes the common idea that the United States is divinely inspired and merges religious and national symbols as sacred. Recently Java and Jesus discussed with an Evangelical Christian who who opposes Christian nationalism, which explains these ideas, why they are dangerous, and how to talk about them.

    Defending Equity in Schools

As we have , members of the racial justice mission team have been attending statewide Zoom meetings sponsored by Faithful Stance for Equity, a coalition of faith-based groups seeking to defend schools. To blunt the wave of sympathy about racial justice issues after the 2020 police killing of George Floyd, political operatives intentionally manufactured a wave of “anti-critical race theory” bills and protests attacking schools for teaching honest racial history or seeking to promote racial inclusion. The same political operatives are also using harmful scare tactics and attacking schools for equitable treatment of trans, gay, nonbinary, and other gender nonconforming people. From Palestinian Justice

Our freedom to boycott is under attack

Advocates for social justice and free speech, take note! Our right to engage freely in boycotts is under direct attack. Specifically, on June 22nd, the US Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that our right to boycott is not protected by the First Amendment. In making this ruling, the Court of Appeals affirmed an Arkansas law that requires public contractors to sign a pledge promising they will not boycott Israel. This ruling is being challenged and soon will reach the US Supreme Court, where that court will decide (yes or no) if the Arkansas ruling will stand.

At stake in this Supreme Court case is not just our right to boycott Israeli products and US corporations complicit in Israel’s military occupation of Palestine, but the right of US citizens to engage in economic protest actions of any kind. Indeed, if the US Supreme Court upholds the Arkansas ruling, legislatures in all 50 states will be free to place limitations on boycotts of any industries or organizations they choose, in the way Arkansas has done. With such state-mandated restrictions in mind, oil and gas manufacturers, gun manufacturers and others have already fashioned “copycat” laws aimed at restricting boycotts of their products.

    Thomas Beilman and Diane Dulin

    From Immigration Justice

describes changes in treatment of child migrants that is allowing for some family reunification. There’s hope for reuniting families separated at the border.

    This article

The labor crisis in the meat and dairy industries highlights the important role that immigrant workers play in producing America’s food. As from the American Immigration Council shows, labor shortage has led to increased production costs for farmers and employers and higher food prices for American shoppers. To stabilize its food workforce—and thus stabilize prices—the United States should consider expanding temporary work visa programs and implementing other long-term reforms, including providing a path to citizenship for many of the undocumented workers in the U.S. today.

“The movement of the spirit of God in the hearts of people often causes them to act against the spirit of their times, or causes them to anticipate a spirit which is yet in the making. In a moment of dedication they are given wisdom and courage to dare a deed that challenges and to kindle a hope that inspires.”

    Driver Help Needed

Help is needed to drive the granddaughter of Steve Sheets to and from work sites.  24-year-old Aileen Jones is self-employed with her own cleaning service. She has just recently suffered a seizure.  As a precaution DMV prohibits driving for three months.  Given the cost of taxis and her tight budget, Steve is requesting help in driving Aileen to and from her job sites for the near future. It is possible to involve two drivers, one to the site and another to take her home or to another site. Here are her workdays, hours, and locations:

Every other Monday, 8 am -?, Farwell Drive, Madison

Every Tuesday, 8 am-12 pm, Farwell Drive, Madison

Every other Tuesday, 1pm-?, Regis Road, Madison

Two days Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday, 9 am-4 pm, Dartmouth Drive, Waunakee

Every other Thursday, 9 am-12 pm, Brunette Drive, Madison

Last Friday of the month, 9 am- 12pm, Eagle Crest Drive

If you are able to help, call Aileen directly 608-214-3655. She can offer more specific information, or contact Steve Sheets at erab1958@icloud.com

    Yard Help

    It’s Not Just Weeding!

The landscape at church needs other things besides weeding this summer.

The flower beds, new trees (put in fall of 2020), and new shrubs put in last spring need water when the weather is hot and dry. If it hasn’t rained an inch or more for a week, the plants are very thirsty. (Our last good rain was a week ago.) If you live near the church and your knees don’t allow you to kneel and weed, consider watering parts of the landscape. Hoses are at each door. If you are at the church to work in the Veggie Village or attend a meeting, consider taking time to water while there. The hosta beds on the northwest corner and the perennial bed to the east of the parking lot are well established and can probably survive and thrive without regular supplemental watering. If you water the meditation garden, look for the big white lilies to bloom soon.

The paths have to be cared for to look nice. A solution of 1 gallon of white vinegar, 1-2 cups of salt and 1-2 tablespoons of dish soap sprayed on the area has been effective for killing the weeds (except pigweed which has thick stems and leaves). It is much less hazardous than using Round-Up. Supplies, including a pump sprayer, are available. You can borrow my sprayer to use on weeds at your house if you want.

Of course, the weeds are growing like weeds and you can pull them in any of the beds at any time. Please contact me with questions or join me on Wednesday mornings. Joyce Pohl–608-206-5697 or joyce@pohl.us

Community Organizing Workshop: Saturday July 23, 2022

On Saturday, July 23, 2022, from 11:30am to 1:00pm (lunch included), Good Shepard Lutheran Church, in partnership with UW-Madison Extension and the Southwest Madison Action Coalition (SMAC), is sponsoring a facilitated workshop on “Community Organizing and Engagement.” Facilitators are Randy Stoecker (UW Madison), Sheray Wallace (Meadowood Health Partnership), and Cory Foster (Toki Middle School. Topics will include understanding the foundations of community organizing, helping attendees see themselves as leaders, and focusing on strengths to create effective change. Sheray and Cory will share their experiences.

The July program is one of five mediated workshops this summer and fall.

To register for this or other programs, go to SMAC’s Eventbrite page: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/love-your-neighborhood-gathering-tickets-330245241407?utm_source=Eventbrite&utm_medium=Online,+paper&utm_campaign=Leadership+series

    ORUCC Welcomes Six New Members!

Becky Baumbach writes–I am retired from Madison College where I was a Vice President of strategic planning. I have a degree in social work and a masters in business. In my retirement, I have become a certified yoga instructor and most recently became trained as an interfaith/interspiritual, spiritual director and companion. I love to sit with people as they navigate life’s challenges. My practice is Third Heart Spiritual Guidance, thirdheartspiritualguidance.com. I was drawn to Orchard Ridge because it fits with my philosophy of “many paths, one goal,” and my roots in Christianity. I love to kayak, bike, hike, and ski. I have 2 daughters and one grandson in Eau Claire, Wi and Durango, Co. My partner, Richard Judd, is a regular ORUCC attender.

Giulia Lawrence grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and has lived in Toronto, Ontario and Orange County, Ca prior to moving to Madison with her family in 2016. She has two sons, ages 11 and 12. Her partner, Seph, is a sound designer and composer who works in the video game industry. Giulia is a teacher, coach, and community-builder focused on helping busy parents build mental fitness and emotional resilience through one-on-one coaching and communities of practice. Her mission is to ensure that busy parents have the support and connection they need to thrive, within a larger culture that so often invites disconnection from self and others. In addition, she actively oversees her sons’ homeschool education. Her interests include neuroscience, yoga, and learning how to knit. She fell in love with ORUCC after she watched some sermons over the live stream and attended Java and Jesus over Zoom, where everyone was so welcoming, and the conversation was so lively and open. She is thrilled to be a new member of this beautiful, special community.

Susi Petta writes–My name is Susi Petta. I have been married to Mike for 49 years. We have three children, Sara and Kurt Knueve, Brett and Danielle Petta and Suzanne and Shannon Blackamore. They have blessed us with six beautiful grandchildren, Anna & Will, Emma & Sophie, Makayla and Eliana. I am a small town girl from Darlington, WI and lived most of my life in the rural settings until we

moved to Madison 21 years to be close to our children and their families. I am a retired nurse, which was the best career ever. Nursing provided me with wonderful opportunities to move around in my field. My last years were spent in hospice and palliative care. It was a honor to sit bedside with patients and families as they transition. I enjoy gardening, walks, good books and hanging out with family and friends. I am grateful to become part of ORUCC. Its vision and mission statement has inspired me! I love its social justice programing, inclusivity of all, and community building philosophy!

Barb Wells writes–I was born in Reedsburg, grew up on a dairy farm and married my “high school sweetheart”, Randy. We loved our life together with our three children: Allison and Matt have two beautiful boys, Landon (7) and Liam (5), and will move from Lexington, KY to Green Bay in July. Kyle and Rachel (grand-dog Mani and grand-cat Finn) live in New Richmond. Steph and her boyfriend, Jake (grand-dog Kita and grand-cat Dickens) live in Madison. Randy died unexpectedly on May 2, 2016. I’m still working through the grief and many changes in my life. I moved to Milwaukee in 2017 and in November 2020 (yes, during COVID) I started a new job with the Revenue Cycle Team at UW Hospital. I love connecting with people and value the opportunities where I can make a positive difference in someone’s day. Randy and I were members of Reedsburg UMC for 30 years. After moving to Milwaukee, I found a new church home with Christ Church UCC. Pastor Dan Stark from Christ UCC suggested ORUCC, and here I am! I look forward to making connections with people and continuing my journey of faith at Orchard Ridge.

Sara Knueve writes: The biggest part of what defines me is my connection to others:  my children, Anna (19) and Will (17), my husband, Kurt, my parents, my siblings, nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.  Being in community and serving my community is at the heart of who I am.

I work for the Madison Metropolitan School District as the Coordinator of Student Services, which means I support the districts’ school psychologists, counselors and social workers.  I also am an educational consultant, helping districts grow their ability to collaborate and innovate. In addition, I own a small business called Cedarwood Healing. I work with horses as my partners to help humans heal (equine therapy).  This healing work also helps me stay connected to nature and its restorative rhythms.

We have both Protestant and Catholic faith roots and we are seeking a local church that speaks to our hearts and acts on a calling to do better by one another.

Kurt Knueve writes: My wife Sara and I have two children, Anna (19) and Will (17) and have lived in the Madison area since 2001. I’ve been an educator since 1998 and am currently working for the Madison Metropolitan School District as a digital learning coach. I love teaching and working with the schools I support. In my free time I love spending time with my family playing games, going on hikes, sailing and traveling. Our family visited ORUCC about a year ago as we were looking for a congregation that was focused on social justice and matched scripture with current events.

    Technology Fundraiser is Open!

    Dear ORUCC Friends,

The church is moving ahead with technology improvements, and we’re welcoming contributions to help pay for them. Hybrid meetings in the Alfred Swan Room are already happening; these permit people present in the room to share the event with those connected from home via Zoom. Next up, we will be adding technology to make it possible to hold larger hybrid meetings and enhanced educational events in Friendship Hall.

These are exciting and empowering technological improvements; we feel they’re essential as we continue to grapple with faithful ways to be the church in a time of pandemics. To learn more and to find out how you can help with a contribution toward our new technology, please read this post from the ORUCC website.

If you have questions or comments, please get in touch with one of us.

              Volunteer Opportunity

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, a collaborate partner in Keeping Neighbors Connected (KNC) has provided a Thursday food pantry for neighbors in our Southwest neighborhood for more than 20 years. It is supported by the Second Harvest Food Bank. Rick Thomas, the food pantry manager, recently reported a shortage of volunteers to help on Thursdays. Is this a volunteer opportunity for you?

    Thursday Food Pantry shifts include:
  • 8:30-10am stocking shifts
  • Host shifts (the most critical shortage) are 9:45-12 noon or 5:15-7pm.
  • Most volunteers work 1 shift per month
  • Most volunteers wear masks, but it’s not mandatory

If you are interested in this collaborative volunteer opportunity, email Rick at rthomas@gslcwi.com for further questions and to complete required paperwork.

If you know someone who needs encouragement and would like the devotional mailed to them, please contact Julie Wombacher in the church office.

    Women’s Book Group

    July 7, 1:30-3:00

ORUCC Women’s Book Group will meet Thursday, July 7 from 1:30 to 3:00 pm to discuss The Phone Booth at the End of the World by Laura Imai Messina. Ginny Kruse will facilitate. From Kirkus review: Two bereft people find themselves seeking a garden at the top of a hill in Ōtsuchi, Japan, where a disconnected phone allows the grief-stricken to send their voices into the wind as they talk to those they have lost. This wonderful, gentle, hopeful story leads the reader through the beginning of Yui and Takeshi’s 30 years together. Through their sorrow and grief, they learn how to let happiness, hope, joy, and laughter reside side by side with their memories of loss.

A Zoom link will be sent. If you would like to be added to the book group list please email Deanna at dsblanchard77@gmail.com.

If you are interested in this collaborative volunteer opportunity, email Rick at rthomas@gslcwi.com for further questions and to complete required paperwork.

    every Sunday in June
beginning at 8:45 and lasting for 50 minutes
    Teacher: Leslie Linser
The class will take place on “The Patio,” the concrete area outside the worship hall, or indoors incase of inclement weather. This is an embodied and contemplative way to enter into worship on our day of Sabbath. Leslie Linser, a member of ORUCC and certified yoga instructor, will teach a yoga class grounded in spirituality with breath and prayer and meditation.
From Leslie: “The style of yoga being offered is best described as a gentle, slow flow. And while this will be slow and gentle it will require the ability to get on and off a mat (the floor). If one is able to get on and off the mat then most poses can be modified to fit your abilities. It is important that you know your own abilities and limitations and consult your physician if you are unsure if this is right for you. Whether you are a beginner or experienced in yoga practice, this class is intended to support you in engaging in gentle movements and in entering into a space of quiet and meditation that all can experience. And if you are an experienced practitioner there will be space and opportunities for more challenging poses.
If you have questions please email me at “

    June Compassion Offering
    Ukraine Refugee Relief
In June, the ORUCC Christian Witness and Service Ministry is focusing on refugee relief in and around Ukraine. We are partnering with the UCC-Wisconsin Conference, and its partner, Church World Service and their Ukraine Crisis Response Fund.

The Ukraine Crisis Response Fund is addressing the unique needs of Ukrainians displaced by Russia’s invasion. In meeting the basic needs of these refugees, the Fund is providing shelter and distributing food, hygiene items and school supplies.

The situation in Ukraine and neighboring countries is unstable and continues to change. Through the Crisis Response Fund, Ukrainians who have been forced to flee from their homes receive warm welcomes to help stabilize their situations.

Uniting in prayer, action, and giving, we stand as people of faith in love and compassion with the people of Ukraine.

Yoga at ORUCC with Leslie Linser

I have been practicing yoga for the last 8 years and recently completed my 200 hour yoga teacher training. I am very excited to offer yoga classes at ORUCC.  My goal is to offer a yoga class grounded in spirituality.  This means there will be space for prayer and meditation while moving with the breath.

    What is Yoga?

For people who are not familiar with yoga, it is a practice that involves different movements and postures that are coordinated with the breath.  The original practice of yoga involved the challenge of stilling the mind by focusing on the breath with very little or no movement.  It has evolved to include postures, called asanas, and movement.  Indeed, there are many types of yoga, but the primary purpose continues to be a mental exercise as well as a physical one.

    Is This Right For Me?

The style of yoga being offered is best described as a gentle, slow flow.

    When, Where and What
  • The class will be offered every Sunday in June beginning at 8:45am and lasting about 50 minutes
  • We will use the outdoor space north of the worship hall, on the concrete slab, now called the patio. An alternative indoor option will be provided in the case of inclement weather
  • You will need to bring a mat and a firm blanket to provide extra padding if you wish.
  • There is no cost to participate in this ORUCC-sponsored activity. However, donations will be accepted
  • After the June classes I will evaluate the degree of interest and determine whether to continue to offer a class throughout the year.

    Welcome back, Boyds!

Dear Members and Friends of ORUCC,

We write to share our heartfelt welcome of former senior pastor Winton Boyd and his wife Tammy Boyd to worship services and other special events on an occasional basis. They will join us this coming Sunday June 19 to support their daughter Kythie as she leads music in worship.

Winton and Tammy will continue to be regular attenders of Holy Wisdom Monastery where they are committed to serving. Winton will not perform any pastoral duties at ORUCC such as weddings, baptisms, or funerals.

Julia and Winton have built a trusting relationship with one another. Winton celebrates and supports Julia in her ministry and will pass anything of pastoral nature on to Julia.

We lift up ORUCC in gratitude and give thanks for this community of faith that will embrace them together: Julia as our leader and senior pastor and Winton and Tammy as our friends and supporters.

    June 19 Sunday Service

    Welcome, Boyds!

Dear Members and Friends of ORUCC,

We write to share our heartfelt welcome of former ORUCC senior pastor Winton Boyd and his wife Tammy Boyd to worship services and other special events on an occasional basis. They will join us this coming Sunday June 19 to support their daughter Kythie as she leads music in worship.

Winton and Tammy will continue to be regular attenders of Holy Wisdom Monastery where they are committed to serving. Winton will not perform any pastoral roles at ORUCC such as pastoral care, weddings, baptisms, or funerals.

Julia and Winton have built a trusting relationship with one another. Winton celebrates and supports Julia in her ministry and will pass anything of a pastoral nature on to Julia.

We lift up ORUCC in gratitude and give thanks for this community of faith that will embrace them together: Julia as our leader and senior pastor and Winton and Tammy as our friends and supporters.

    Yours in God’s Holy Name,

    Barbara Stretchberry

All are welcome to outdoor Yoga before church
    every Sunday in June
beginning at 8:45 and lasting for 50 minutes

    ORUCC Welcomes 11 New Members!

Diane Dulin……and her husband Tom Beilman returned to Madison three years ago, following 43 years on the West Coast. Children and grandchildren in the close vicinity were the strongest draw, but Diane has always loved Madison since finishing high school and college here.

Diane attended seminary at Pacific School of Relition in Berkeley, California and served 34 years as a United Church of Christ pastor in California and Oregon. She is Pastor Emerita of First Congregational UCC of Hillsboro, Oregon, where she served as senior pastor for 21 years.

A trip to the Wet Bank of Palestine in 2011 proved life-changing, and she has returned many times while also working through ecumenical partnerships for the cause of justice for Palestinian men, women and children. Her hobbies include reading, walking and sewing quilts.

Tom Beilmanwas raised in Madison, attending Edgewood and Madison West high schools. While at West, he met and later married Diane Dulin. After graduating from UW-Madison, Tom and Diane moved to the West Coast and raised three children. Diane obtained a Master of Divinity degree and served as pastor of churches in California and Oregon, while Tom worked for thirty years at Hewlett-Packard Corporation. Three years ago, Tom and Diane moved “back” to Madison to be close to daughters Joanna and Laura, who both live in and near Madison. Their son Andrew also moved to Wisconsin, and lives in Middleton.

Today Tom serves as an activist for Palestinian human rights. He is the principal author of a UCC General Synod resolution opposing the system of arrest and detention of Palestinian children by Israeli military forces, and produced How Are the Children? film and curriculum (www.HATCnow.org). He is working diligently to support a UN-certified refugee from Gaza, whose mother, father and other family members were severely injured by Israeli military assaults. Working closely with Ghassan’s official sponsor in Ottawa, Tom prays that Ghassan will soon get his wish for a new, better (and safer!) life in Canada.

Tom’s favorite pastimes include activities with his children and grandchildren, studying Civil War and WWII history, taking long distance walks (ask him about the Camino Santiago pilgrimage route in Spain), attending sports car races, and observing great whales whenever his travels take him to coastal waters.

Julia Burkey….The Rev. Dr. Julia Burkey has been the Senior Pastor of ORUCC since October 2020. It has been an adventure so far, serving the church virtually after moving to Wisconsin pregnant and during the pandemic with her partner Daniel! She gave birth to their daughter Reverie Faye during her second month as a pastor of ORUCC and is delighted to be living into another deep call in her life to be a mother. Julia, Daniel and Reverie love exploring Wisconsin together.

Julia earned her Master of Divinity with a special focus on the Bible and Arts & Worship from Union Theological Seminary in 2012. Upon her graduation, Julia was awarded the Karen Ziegler Prize “for exemplifying the highest ideals for feminist and liberation theology in preaching.” While serving for seven years as Senior Pastor of First Church in Middletown, CT.

Julia received a Doctor of Ministry from Hartford Theological Seminary in 2020, one of the premier seminaries for interfaith dialogue. Julia’s doctorate is in church visioning and Truth and Reconciliation process around racial justice.

Julia has a passion for hearing people’s stories and an unwavering conviction that God seeks and loves those on the margins. Julia seeks passionately to be an ally for communities of color and LGBTQIA+ communities, identifying as queer herself. Not raised in the church, Julia came to Christianity later in life. Raised by a Buddhist mother and philosophy professor father, being curious and seeking questions rather than finding firm answers feels important to Julia in her spiritual path. As a former dancer and performer, Julia brings an artistic dynamic to her preaching and leading. Julia is also a trained doula.

Daniel Cooperrider…..is the spouse of Pastor Julia Burkey, father of Reverie Faye, and an ordained pastor in the United Church of Christ. Originally from northeast Ohio, Daniel grew up spending summers at his family cabin in Washburn County, WI. Daniel studied philosophy and theology at the University of Chicago. After serving as Pastoral Resident at the Wellesley Village Church UCC, Daniel was Pastor of the Weybridge Church UCC in Vermont for seven years. Daniel’s passions include writing, fly fishing, foraging, and other outdoor adventures.

Cindy Fillingame…..I was born in Washington state and moved to Madison in 1975. My daughter Laura, son-in-law Mike, and grandkids Maia (9) and Reid (8) live in Denver, CO. I taught 5th grade and at the middle school in Verona for 28 years. After retiring in 2006 I have enjoyed tending my flower gardens and making connections with friends with similar interests: book clubs, a theater group, garden club, line dancing, and travel. My partner, Steve Sheets, has introduced me to UW Women’s Volleyball, RV travel, Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ, and many wonderful friends.

Barbie Jackson….. I grew up in northern New Jersey but came to UW-Madison in 1967 and have made my home in Madison ever since. I worked as an IT project manager at the University before retiring in 2010. My passion for over 25 years has been mentoring Black, mostly low-income children and young adults. That passion grew into a desire to work toward systemic change in our community, so I found my way to MOSES where I have been extremely active since 2017.

Through my involvement with MOSES, I came to know Pam Oliver, who introduced me to ORUCC. After my first church experience hearing a joyful and affirming sermon from Julia, I was hooked. I immediately enrolled in Ken’s Prospective New Member Class and became a new member in 2022.

I am happily married to Andy Jackson, who shares my passion for the exhilarating sports of E-Scow sailboat racing on Lake Mendota and downhill skiing in Colorado. We also love the various cats who have graced our home and all our backyard visitors. Andy likes to research and write about psychology while I occupy myself in the garden, with MOSES, and occasionally with the kids I adore who are now mostly grown up.

Peg Knueve…..I am Peg Knueve. I have been married to Don Knueve for 51 years. We lived most of our married life in Defiance Ohio, raising three beautiful children, and now have five amazing grandchildren. Our two boys live in Verona, so we moved to Evia Apartments in Verona.  My faith has always been an important part of my life. I taught visual art to young children for 41 years and learned the work was largely soul work. When children create, God often helps kids tell their stories, allowing them to express themselves in a more relaxed atmosphere. As a lifelong Catholic, I was confused by the wonderful message it shared with so many rules attached. For years I grew more and more uncomfortable with this, though I gained beautiful friendships and met some wonderful ministers of the faith. I am so happy to be in a place that cares about others and the world we live in, but without judgment about how we go about our living. As a member I want to figure out how God wants me to serve.

Colleen McHenry…..I’m a Madison-native, though I’ve also lived in Iowa (college) and New York City. I’ve spent many years working in health care, first as a pharmacy tech, and then in organ transplant at UW Health. A few years ago, I started working as a data engineer at UW Health, and I think I’ve found my perfect fit. I’m always learning something new, and I like that my work ultimately benefits patients. In my free time, I enjoy lots of crafts (knitting, crochet, embroidery, spinning wool into yarn – think Rumpelstiltskin!), gardening, reading, learning to play piano, and being active outdoors. My favorite vacations have been summer bike trips around Wisconsin and winter skiing and snowshoeing up north. My best buddies are my two cats, Sunny and Juniper. They are almost a year old, full of energy, and unbearably cute. I’m excited to be a new member of ORUCC–it just feels like home (I accidentally typed “hope” first, and that also fits!) I love that the church is open and affirming, the services are progressive, and the community has plenty of groups and activities to join.

Manuel Ramminger…..I was born and raised in Gummersbach, Germany. In 2001, I moved to Madison for theological training with Youth With A Mission (YWAM). From 2002-2019 I worked as a fulltime staff with YWAM running Bible Schools and providing leadership development for our staff. My work brought me to over 35 nations and I taught workshops and seminars on justice in five continents. My extensive study of Scripture had me arrive at conclusions that were at odds with the predominant views that were widespread in some evangelical churches that were steeped in Christian nationalism and gave Donald Trump the presidency in 2016. This started a process of decolonizing my faith which brought me to Orchard Ridge UCC. I currently work as a missionary with Ethical Trade Co where we make a difference through job creation in areas of poverty, exploitation and human trafficking. I also work as a freelance broadcast tech and Technical Director for a local production company.

Ginny Stiles……I got my undergrad degree at Beloit College and my masters at UW-Whitewater. I have one sister who lives in South Carolina. My first husband I had 3 children, all graduated from high school in Williams Bay, Wisconsin…one of whom followed me to Beloit College! I was raised in the “Congregational” Church which, of course, became the UCC in 1957 which was also the year I graduated from high school. So my roots in this denomination go back many years. Greg and I were married in the Williams Bay UCC church in 1990 and belonged to that church for many years where we both served as moderators and were on search committees.

I taught school for 32 years at Reek School in Lake Geneva and Greg and I lived in Elkhorn for 20 years and then in Leesburg, Florida for 12 years until we moved here to Madison in 2021. We summer on and off at our Northwoods cabin in Lac du Flambeau and we now have 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

I love sketching and painting (mostly watercolor), teach pen and ink Zentangle,

head up one of the book clubs at University Woods, sing in the choir, and have a blog: ginnystiles.blogspot.com.

Greg Stiles…..I grew up in Beloit and went to school at UW-Platteville. I had 3 children with my first wife and they all grew up and went to school in Beloit. I was a newspaper delivery boy while growing up (remember paper boys?). I am an only child.

I worked in the engineering department of Hough Manufacturing for 10 years in Janesville and at Warner Electric in South Beloit in Quality Control for 20 years. Ginny and I were married in the UCC church in Williams Bay in 1990 where we were both very active members serving as moderators and on search committees.

We lived in Elkhorn for 20 years and Leesburg, Florida 12 years. We’ll celebrate our 32nd anniversary on June 17. We did a lot of RV travel around the US. And later we traveled to England, Germany, New Zealand and Western Samoa (Also Hawaii). We moved to Madison in 2021 and really like Oakwood: University Woods. Ginny and I have 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

My hobbies are motor sports, gardening, forestry, garage sales, model trains and puttering around at the up Northwoods cabin in Lac du Flambeau that has been in my family for 50 years.

    Garden & Grounds Work

    Saturday, June 11

    10:00 am

After pruning there is new growth……

It is time to prune the huge lilacs in the churchyard. We need people to bring chainsaws, pruners and upper body strength to work on the landscape this Saturday at 10:00 AM! The lilacs can be cut down to the ground (easier but heavy) OR we can do renewal pruning which involves taking out the largest 1/3 of the trunks (more thought and time involved). Renewal pruning promotes new growth and blossoms that we can reach. The lilacs are done blooming for this year and the city is scheduled to pick up brush next week so this is the right time to do this.

We need to try to kill off the weeds in paths using a home made, non toxic substitute for Round Up. If your knees hurt or your arms aren’t really strong this may be the job for you!

General weeding and smaller pruning jobs are also on the agenda. We even have a baby Pagoda Dogwood tree to try to save in the meditation garden. Please bring gloves, tools marked with your name and a water bottle. Treats will be provided. Plan to go home before noon.

    Volunteers for Camp Awesum Needed

Camp Awesum, our UCC camp for people on the autism spectrum and their families, is looking for volunteers. Experience is not required. Just patience and the ability to adapt to the needs of individuals. Each day during the week is split between working and your own relaxation. The work is extremely satisfying. The goal for all of the staff/volunteers is to provide respite for the parents and an enjoyable time for their families.

We are seeking a whole new team of volunteers to serve in 2022 on Sunday mornings for in-person worship. You need not be a member, simply a person who loves ORUCC and is eager to find a place to serve!

    ORUCC-June Garden Work

Please read ahead of time and come prepared to discuss an extract from a sociology article that talks about mixed-race faith-based progressive organizations in which people from different backgrounds work together for social justice. It talks about how two different kinds of emotion-laden personal narratives are used to help people connect across difference: what the author calls “lived injustice” stories by those who have themselves suffered from injustice and “failed covenant” stories by relatively privileged people who talk about their moral awakening to injustice. What kinds of personal stories do we tell about our faith and social justice? Are these the only two kinds of stories or are there others? What have been people’s experiences working to create solidarity across difference in mixed-race or other “mixed” groups?
