From Racial Justice Mission Team

Learn about white christian nationalism

White christian nationalists are claiming to speak for Christians when they attack racial diversity, LGBTQ rights, abortion, and election results. ORUCC member Rev. Dr. David Anderman will lead an eight-week study group on Tuesday mornings 10:30am-12:00pm from February 28- April 25 and Thursday evenings 7pm-8:30pm March 2- April 27. The study group will be hybrid (in person and virtual on Zoom) in the Swan seminar room at ORUCC. The Racial Justice Mission Team has been discussing this issue for over a year and we think it is time to bring it to the congregation. We asked David to write a statement about this issue for the ORUCC website.

We are grateful for the ministry of Jeanne Moberly who is a member of Adult Faith Formation, as she puts together a set of fresh readings every week for our devotional practice at Orchard Ridge UCC. You will see these posted daily if you are part of the “Members & Friends” Facebook group. If you know someone who needs encouragement and would like the devotional mailed to them, please contact Julie Wombacher in the church office.

March Compassion Offering

One Great Hour of Sharing

One Great Hour of Sharing®, an ecumenical offering sponsored in Lent by the United Church of Christ, provides humanitarian and disaster relief in the United States and around the world. When a disaster strikes or people are displaced or made refugees by violence or extreme poverty, you are part of the immediate response and the work for long- term recovery. Because the UCC works in partnership to churches and organizations through Global Ministries and worldwide response and recovery networks, your contributions to One Great Hour of Sharing put you in the right place at the right time for the relief, accompaniment and recovery of the most vulnerable. You meet immediate needs and you address the underlying causes that create those needs in the first place.

You can make a donation by check, on the memo line, please write “compassion” and mail to ORUCC, 1501 Gilbert Road, Madison, WI 53711, or donate online from our website. The link is https://orucc.org/contribute/support/

Racial Justice News

McFarland UCC invites others in the Wisconsin Conference to join their discussions of three episodes of the video series, “The Color of Compromise” in person or on Zoom on Tuesday March 7, and March 14 at 6:30. This series describes how church people have helped create and maintain racist ideas and practices. Sessions will begin with watching a 20 minute video followed by small group discussions in person or on Zoom and then a large group wrap-up, ending by 8pm. To participate, please send an email to [email protected] and include “The Color of Compromise” in the email subject line. You will receive the zoom link and password a few days before the event.

“Mudbound”

Set in the rural American South during World War II, Mudbound is a 2017 American historical drama film directed by Dee Rees. It was written by Rees and Virgil Williams, The film depicts two World War II veterans – one white, one black – who return to rural Mississippi each to address racism and PTSD in his own way. The film premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2017.

Critics praised its screenplay and direction, and the cast’s performances.  At the 90th Academy Awards, the film earned four nominations: Best Supporting Actress for Blige; Best Original Song for Blige, Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson (Blige became the first person to ever be nominated for both acting and songwriting in the same year); Best Adapted Screenplay for Rees and Virgil Williams (Rees became the first Black woman to ever be nominated) and Best Cinematography, which made Rachel Morrison the first woman to ever be nominated in the category. The film is rated R.  A discussion will follow in the Sun Room.
