There are two tables set up in Friendship Hall with the lost and found items, from the last year. Please look and see if you have forgotten a jacket or a cup or have lost a glove or a scarf. What is not retrieved will be taken to Goodwill.

There is also a table with Free Books…..please take what you would like and the rest will be donated.

Welcome to 2023 Fellow Readers!

We have this year’s line up of books all set (Link to Schedule). Our first Zoom meeting will be held Thursday, February 2 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. A link will be sent to those on the email list. This month’s discussion will be led by Leslie Rebhorn about Like a Mule Bringing Ice Cream to the Sun by Sarah Ladigo Manyika. This is a story of an independent 75-year-old Nigerian woman living in San Francisco and the changes she encounters when her independence is challenged by an injury. Leaders are needed for September and November meetings.

Friday Breakfast Group – February 3

The next Friday Breakfast is set for February 3 at 8:30 am at Denny’s, 433 S. Gammon Road. All are welcome! The group meets on the first Friday of the month and includes both men and women. GREAT COMMUNITY, GREAT FOOD, GREAT PROGRAM

Over 55 Wednesday, February 8, 11:30 am

JustDane is entering its 50th year serving the Madison area serving people in a wide variety of ways. Healing House provides medical respite for families without housing after hospitalization. Just Bakery not only provides delicious baked goods, but provides job training for people reentering the community after imprisonment. A variety of other programs work to protect health, reduce violence, and reconnect people with the community.

Orchard Ridge UCC members Julie Horst and Phil Haslanger will give an overview of the work of JustDane at the Over 55 lunch gathering on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Julie is co-president of the JustDane board and is a research project manager at the Center for Health Enhancement System Studies at UW-Madison. Phil is secretary of the JustDane Board and is serving this year as a parish associate at Christ Presbyterian Church.

Movie Group Returns to Oakwood Village

Join us to Watch the Film: “CODA” With Discussion to Follow

Our November showing was so successful we are returning to Oakwood Village to watch CODA (Child Of Deaf Adults) a 2021 coming-of-age film set in Gloucester, Mass. The movie won three Academy Awards- Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay. The film explores the struggles of 17 year old Ruby Rossi, the only hearing person in her fishing business family. Ruby faces the moral dilemma of going away to college to further her passion for singing, knowing that may mean abandoning her family and their livelihood. 

Much to enjoy and discuss in this film. We will meet at the Oakwood Village Arts Center at 7:00 on Friday, February 10th and, following the film, meet in the Sun Room for a discussion. This Friday Bethany Schultz will be performing a solo recital of clarinet and bass clarinet music as part of the First Unitarian Society’s Noon Musicale series. She will be joined by the fabulous Beth Wilson on piano.

Members of ORUCC are invited to apply for 2023-2024 college scholarships of $1,000 to $2,000 from the Frank E. Page Scholarship Fund. Applicants should be planning to begin or continue education at any accredited 2- or 4-year college or university, and should have a record of academic achievement, service to church and community, and demonstrated financial need.
