New Adult Study Group starts this Thursday, February 6th
Godly Living in Ungodly Times
Feeling spiritually discombobulated since the election? Disappointed? Confused? Tempted to throw up your hands or throw in the towel? Tired? Wondering how the church can or should be involved in politics, in social justice and service, in other affairs of the world? Should we just lick our wounds and go to church?
We will dig a little deeper on these kinds of questions through exploring a root question for people of faith: How are the heavenly kingdom and the earthly kingdom related? Or, stated a little differently, less old-fashioned and stuffy: How are church and politics related? Should they be? What are the options and possibilities?
David Anderman will lead a study group on these topics Thursday mornings in the Swan Room 10:00 -11:30 am on February 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th, with the discussion picking up again after Easter, May 1st, 8th, and 15th.
A Thursday evening zoom group is a possibility if there are enough people willing to commit to attending five of the seven sessions. We’re looking for at least eight.

In some minority parts of the US, a common question is “Do you know what time it is?” It’s not a question answered by looking at your phone or your wrist. It’s a question about what is of ultimate significance in our lives and in our world.
Our first two sessions will wrestle with how we live as Christians in a world where we are not sure what time it is. Augustine, who lived, ministered, and wrote in north Africa during the decline of the Roman Empire wrestled with similar questions. Augustine has bequeathed us three tools that we will learn about through a short article.
In the remaining sessions, we will read a number of popular article, news reports, and commentaries putting to use the tools from Augustine. Our goal is to be able to bring some deeper spiritual understanding to the often raging and raucous debates about religion and politics, and church and state.
