Safe Sanctuary Training for Youth Volunteers

At Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ, we believe that our church should be a safe sanctuary for all those who come in good faith. Most importantly, it should be a safe sanctuary for the children and youth who are entrusted to us.
Toward this goal, our congregation has adopted a Safe Sanctuary policy: a set of policies, procedures, and educational programs to reduce the possibility of child sexual or physical abuse, or any type of sexual misconduct or harassment from occurring in our congregation. These policies express our keen interest in protecting our children and youth, while maintaining the trusting atmosphere of our congregation for the entire congregation, adults and children alike.
On Sunday, Oct. 2 at 9:00 AM, we will conduct our annual Safe Sanctuary training program. Every volunteer who works with kids and youth will need to receive the training (which involves reviewing and discussing the policy) before helping out in the kids’ programming. It should take approximately 30 minutes. Thank you to our volunteers for helping to make ORUCC a welcoming and safe space for our youth!

On Sunday, Oct. 2nd, our Sunday School children will be discussing “The Courage to Forgive,” and considering the story of the Prodigal Son, along with Matthew 18:21-22:
“Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.’”
The teacher will share, “When we forgive someone who has hurt us, we are being a peacemaker. Is there anyone you need to forgive? Are there any grudges you carry? What does it feel like when you carry a grudge?”
In our session of Java & Jesus this Sunday, let’s have an open honest conversation about forgiveness!
Please read ahead of time and come prepared to discuss an article by Marie M. Fortune, who works with domestic violence survivors, called, “Forgiveness: the Last Step.”

Programming for Children
October 2nd
PreK-2nd grade students will enjoy music at 9:00 and then hear another story about the time when Jesus was at the Sea of Galilee. Jill Westberg and Josie Gilbert will share that Jesus modeled kindness towards people with disabled. Jesus even had the power to heal a man who was paralyzed! Children under the age of 5 are invited to stay as long as they are able and then transfer to the nursery to play with Antonia Wuschner and Amalia Sherrill.
3rd-5th Grade will continue their Peacemaker exploration. Last week, they explored giving their anger to God. This week, they will talk about another important piece of becoming a peacemaker - forgiveness. Through a variety of active stations, they will consider peace and forgiveness. Sally Allen and Jadyn Gilbert will guide them through the process.
Music Connections: This week, children in grades 2nd-5th + (middle schoolers and high schoolers are welcome to attend as a participant or helper) are invited to play hand chimes after the children’s moment. Additionally, we will continue our rhythmic and spoken exploration of the scripture, “Be Still and Know that God is Peace.” Chris Thomas is our Music Connections volunteer, this week.

2023 Youth Mission Trip Meeting

Who should attend? Any youth who is currently in 7th grade through 12th grade is eligible to attend the trip. Parents/guardians should also attend this meeting with their youth.

The Crossing Campus Ministry
The Crossing is a progressive Christian campus ministry on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. The mission of The Crossing is to provide a Christian campus ministry where students can explore, question, understand, develop and affirm their relationship to God, each other and the world. This mission includes being a diverse and theologically open-minded Christian ministry that allows members of the university community the freedom to grasp anew the love and grace of God through an understanding of, and commitment to, living the gospel of Jesus Christ with a particular focus on his life and teachings. In short, The Crossing is a place where students can belong in community, explore their faith, and become their authentic selves.
At The Crossing when we say “ALL ARE WELCOME”, we mean it. The Crossing is a Reconciling in Christ, Open, Welcoming and Affirming ministry. We celebrate God’s diversity in sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, different abilities, faith tradition or lack of faith, national origin, racial, ethnic and economic background and any other difference.
During the 2021-2022 academic year The Crossing hosted around 125 students per week in the study/community spaces and over 75 students participated in worship and small group programs. In addition, The Crossing fed around 150 students per week through the Food Recovery Network and the Frozen Meal Program, not including the hundreds of students and community members that our longtime friends from Slow Food UW host in the building.
Events planned for this Fall include:

- Open Mic Night
- Weekly Dinner + Worship
- Weekly Bible Study
- Fellowship & support groups for Freshman and Graduate students
- Queer Students of Faith exploring queer theology
- Food Recovery Meals — Free hot meals are served on Tuesday evenings & Friday lunch-time
- UW Frozen Meals — Frozen meals from the UW dining halls are delivered weekly; available when the building is open

Appeal from the United Church of Christ
for Pakistan
Following massive flooding across nearly three-quarters of the country, the United Church of Christ is issuing an appeal in support of the people of Pakistan. Pakistan has been enduring severe monsoon weather since June, with rainfall equivalent to 2.9 times the national 30-year average. To date, more than half of the country’s 160 districts have been declared ‘calamity hit’ by the government, a number that is expected to increase as rain and flooding continues.
With more than 33 million people affected by the flooding so far and an estimated 6.4 million in need of humanitarian assistance, this response is greatly needed. Through our membership in the ACT Alliance and contributions to its Rapid Response Fund, the United Church of Christ is already supporting early relief efforts. Emergency food and water, medical supplies, temporary shelter kits, and protective services are being offered by ACT members Community World Service Asia and Norwegian Church Aid.
Your gift to the United Church of Christ’s Pakistan Response Fund will help maintain this relief work and support the long-term recovery for vulnerable persons and affected communities. Farmers and livestock owners will receive the seeds, feed, and vaccines they need to restore their livelihoods. Pregnant women – of whom an estimated 650,000 are affected – will receive maternal health services. Protection services will ensure the creation of safe spaces for children and other vulnerable populations. Psychosocial support and trauma resources will be provided. Through our work with global partners and the ACT Alliance, your gift will be joined with others to bring hope, healing, and a helping hand to our neighbors in Pakistan.
