For Children & Youth – March 3rd

Nursery Care opens at 8:30. Jade will provide family support for kiddos infant-5 years in the Crossroads this week.

Sunday School starts at 9 am. ALL PreK-5th grade children are invited to sing with Julie in Friendship Hall from 9:00-9:15. After the music, Pastor Julia will guide the children in a special “Dancing the Labyrinth” experience.

Be sure to pop by the Bridges Room to share your thoughts of “How We Can Make The World A Better Place.” Please add your ideas to the sign on the door. Everyone in our community is welcome to contribute.

Music Connections: This week the children will begin the 10 o’clock hour in the sanctuary and head down to Music Connections with Julie after the Children’s Message.

Older Youth: Youth 6th-High School will meet for Echo the Story Sunday school at 9:00 in the Dorothy Day room with Kristin and Barbara. TRU Function will practice as usual 10:00-12:00. Good news! The new drum set has been purchased! Take a peek into the music room while TF is practicing if you’d like to see the new set in action.

This Sunday at 3:30, we will also have an informational meeting for all youth of confirmation age (7th-9th grade) and their adults. We will plan to meet downstairs in the Brown Room.

Please read ahead of time and come prepared to discuss a chapter from Richard Rohr’s book What Do We Do With Evil?

His chapter “A Way Out and Through” explores the misunderstanding that religion can add to evil if it is only about ritual, rules and obedience. He suggests that our faith should be about the extravagant freedom to love. Rohr urges us to look at systemic causes, rather than individual acts as the only source of evil. As Rohr points out, “We need real wisdom and spiritual intelligence in attacking evil or it rebounds back on us.”

MARCH COMPASSION OFFERING

JustDane (formerly Madison-area Urban Ministry), is a non-profit organization that offers an array of direct supportive initiatives for:

  • people being released from incarceration through our reentry programs, including the Journey Home, Circles of Support and Peer Support,
  • children and families impacted by the justice system,
  • justice-involved youth,
  • employment training for people with barriers to employment through Just Bakery,
  • recuperative medical respite for families experiencing homelessness at Healing House.

In 2023 over 750 individuals received support through JustDane’s initiatives.

This year JustDane celebrates 50 years of social justice work in our community. Throughout our 50 years JustDane has, and continues to engage in the community advocating for State and local justice system reforms, fair and affordable housing, an end to homelessness and racial and economic justice. Rev. William Sloane Coffin once said, “charity yes, always, but never as a substitute for justice.” His words reflect the importance of our work at JustDane offering support to individuals and families in our community, alleviating suffering while working to eliminate the causes of the suffering.
