Sermon: Unleashing Thunder
Preaching: Julia Burkey
This is the second of three sermons focused on non-canonical texts from the early Jesus following movement, to help us understand the diversity of belief and also recover some of the inclusion of female leadership and the divine feminine that became suppressed within Christianity. Last week we heard from The Acts of Paul and Thecla, this Sunday we hear The Thunder: Perfect mind, and on May 22nd we will hear from the Gospel of Mary. These texts matters to us especially now, because to this day some claim to have authority over women’s bodies (as well as LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC bodies) in the name of Christianity. We don’t need to go outside of our Bible to find empowering stories from those on the margins. Yet perhaps reading these non-canonical texts alongside the Bible can help us all discover fresh spiritual resources as well as ways to talk about female bodily autonomy and empowerment of those on the margins from within our own tradition.
