ORUCC Pastor Julia Maternity Leave Plan

Pastor Julia Burkey

Maternity Leave Plans 2024

How exciting that we get to welcome a new baby into our community! This is a joy and a blessing for us all. Near the end of May or early June, to early-mid September, Pastor Julia will take 12 weeks of maternity leave, plus 3 additional weeks of vacation. When Pastor Julia returns, we plan for a gentle and flexible re-integration. Pastor Julia will seek to have focused presence when she returns, spending time where it is needed the most in the life of the church. Pastor Julia will focus on re-entering her role while Pastor Ken & Kate, as well as guest pastors, continue to preach for some weeks in the fall.

While Pastor Julia is on maternity leave, Pastors Ken and Kate will work together as co-pastors, moving slowly and making all decisions together while focusing on sustaining the health and vitality of the church as well as their own personal thriving and family thriving. In addition to focusing on the roles and responsibilities of their own calls, Pastors Kate and Ken will alternate as point pastor for pastoral care and point pastor for coordinating weekly worship with the guest preacher. There will always be someone available.

Pastors Kate & Ken both plan to take vacation time over the summer, and so we pray this plan may allow them to be refreshed and energized for the fall program season even while they work together and step into co-ministry leadership in new ways. Within both of their call agreements, Pastor Kate and Pastor Ken are slated to preach 8 times a year, and even with this maternity leave, they will both reach, but not exceed that amount.

For this reason, we are bringing in two wonderful wider community members to support ORUCC with guest preaching over the summer, The Rev. Phil Haslanger (he/him) & The. Rev. Shelby Perez (they/them).

The Rev. Phil Haslanger (he/him) will preach:

July 21, 28

Aug. 18, 25

Sept. 1

We welcome Phil with joy!

Rev. Phil Haslanger has had careers in journalism and ministry. He worked for The Capital Times for 34 years and was ordained as a United Church Christ minister in 2007. He retired (sort of) as pastor of Memorial UCC in 2017. In the last few years, he has been serving as a parish associate at Christ Presbyterian Church. In addition to his work at church, he serves on the boards of JustDane, Pres House, and the UW-Madison Center for Journalism Ethics. He is a member at Orchard Ridge UCC. Phil has lived in Madison since 1969, when he came here from Marinette WI to attend UW-Madison. He earned a BA in sociology and an MA in journalism. During his transition to ministry, he earned an MA in theology from Lakeland University and served as a chaplain for six months at Meriter Hospital. He is married to Ellen Reuter, has four children and seven grandchildren.

The Rev. Shelby Perez (they/them) will preach:

June 9, 16, 23, 30

August 4, 11

“My name is Shelby, I am a full time trauma chaplain at University Hospital, working primarily with the Emergency Department and Trauma Life Support Center. I’ve been here for two full years, and I am in the process of completing my Board Certification for Chaplaincy. I moved to Madison from Ramallah, Palestine where I was a Global Ministries Intern with Global Ministries. I was working with the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem on a project for interreligious engagement for peace making. In my time in Ramallah I met with worldwide representatives regarding the topic of peacemaking, as well as in advocacy for a young congregation member who had been unjustly imprisoned. Much of my time there was spent in ministry of presence and learning about Palestine and the Palestinian culture and liberation. Prior to that I served a congregation in East Troy while they were in the process of selling their building.

I was ordained on Palm Sunday in 2021.

I moved to the Northside of Madison in 2022, and live with my fiancé. He is a music teacher. We have a cat that I adopted while living in Ramallah, named Alba. We are getting married in July, and spending our honeymoon in the Badlands. For fun I love to hike and do nature photography.”

We welcome Shelby with joy!
