Native American Presentation: Celebrating the Tapestry of Humanity
On Friday June 2 at 7-9 pm and again on Saturday June 3 7-9 pm, Dawn and Art Shegonee will present a multimedia exhibit and program exploring the need for interconnectedness of our common humanity and our relationship to each other and to nonhuman life on this planet. This program is in person at McFarland United Church of Christ, 5710 Anthony Street, McFarland. It is free and open to the public. Please RVSP by sending an email to [email protected]. Art Shegonee, a member of the Menominee and Potawatomi tribes of Wisconsin, is a Native traditional dancer, teacher and peacemaker. An ambassador of Milwaukee’s Indian Summer and Call for Peace Drum & Dance Company, Shegonee specializes in teaching tools of respect, nonviolence, conflict resolution and peace. He has provided over 400 schools, libraries, businesses and community centers with educational programs that demonstrate and teach traditional Native American dance and history, positive communication skills and more. Art and Dawn carried the message of peace to schools in the Call for Peace Talking Stick/Talking Circle programs, and they have worked with groups of all ages to teach the program as a means to resolve conflicts respectfully, peacefully and cooperatively in a Native American tradition. In 1995, the Wisconsin Historical Society honored Art Shegonee by including his image in their permanent exhibit, “People of the Woodlands: Wisconsin Indian Ways.”
