Friday Breakfast Group – July 5

The next Friday Breakfast is set for July 5 at 8:30 am at Denny’s, 433 S. Gammon Road. All are welcome! The group meets on the first Friday of the month and includes both men and women. Women’s Book Group Meeting Changed to July 11

Due to the July 4 holiday, Women’s Book Group will be held July 11 from 1:30 to 3:00pm in the Alfred Swan room and also on Zoom. This worked so well last month that we decided to continue this combined way to participate for the rest of the year. July’s book is Still True by Maggie Ginsberg and Ann Rifenberg will lead the discussion. Also PLEASE NOTE: the August book has been changed to Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende. ORUCC Group Heading to Moon Beach Family Camp on Sunday!

It’s camp season! Over 50 folks from our church community and Pastor Kate will be heading up to Moon Beach Family Camp, June 30-July 6. We pray for a safe, meaningful experience to be had by all. We’ll be sure to share campfire stories when we return!

Our Generosity at Work: Compassion Offering for May

We are delighted to report that May’s Compassion Offering for the Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA) amounted to $14,504.88, including a matching gift from one of our members. This contribution will enable MECA to bring food, hygiene supplies, blankets and psychological support to, and meet other urgent needs in, Gaza immediately.

“Kids in the Garden”

”Kids in the Garden” is our yearly summer enrichment program. During worship, children ages 6 and older (ages 5 and younger must be accompanied by a caregiver) will be invited to hear a nature-themed story, visit our Children’s Garden plot to collect herbs, and make a snack to serve after worship. This program will be offered four more times throughout the summer: 7/14; 8/4,11, & 25. While there is no staffed nursery care during the summer, children of all ages are always welcome to remain in service or to visit the “Crossroads” with a caregiver as well.   

There is no regularly scheduled 9:00 a.m. Sunday School for Children and Youth during the summer. Sunday School will resume on September 8th!

JUNE COMPASSION OFFERING

Casa Alitas

 The compassion offering for June 2024 is Casa Alitas. Casa Alitas is a non-profit, immigrant welcome center near the border in Tucson, Arizona. Casa Alitas provides a warm welcome, food, clothing, and shelter for a few days for legal asylum seekers who have crossed the border. Casa Alitas provides services to 1,000 to 1,500 guests every day.

The ORUCC connection with Casa Alitas was prompted by a mission trip to the border in 2015. Since then, we have maintained a hands-on connection, through compassion offerings, clothing drives and volunteer time at Casa Alitas.

During the last year in particular, despite unpredictable funding allocations from the federal government, Casa Alitas was the only welcome center on the border that maintained its capacity to welcome all who arrived at its doors.

Casa Alitas needs our help now more than ever. Funds that we provide will keep people from being dropped off as street releases in the city of Tucson. All funds will provide direct services to immigrant families. Funds will

• Pay for clothing and food provided by Casa Alitas;
• Buy items for play bags for children; and
• Pay for transportation to reunite families who have been separated at the border.

You will see these posted daily if you are part of the “Members & Friends” Facebook group. If you know someone who needs encouragement and would like the devotional mailed to them, please contact the church office.
