ORUCC –October Lunch & Learn

For Children & Youth

“Kids in the Garden” this Sunday!

”Kids in the Garden” is our yearly summer enrichment program. During worship, children ages 6 and older (ages 5 and younger must be accompanied by a caregiver) will be invited to hear a nature-themed story, visit our Children’s Garden plot to collect herbs, and make a snack to serve after worship. This program will be offered four more times throughout the summer: this Sunday, 7/14; 8/4,11, & 25. While there is no staffed nursery care during the summer, children of all ages are always welcome to remain in service or to visit the “Crossroads” with a caregiver as well.

There is no regularly scheduled 9:00 a.m. Sunday School for Children and Youth during the summer. Sunday School will resume on September 8th!

JULY COMPASSION OFFERING

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Food Pantry: Helping at home in our church neighborhood

Did you know that Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (GSLC) offers a weekly (Thursday) food pantry? This pantry located at 5701 Raymond Road opened its doors in 2005 and currently serves up to 75 eligible individuals and families each week.   Rick Thomas, GSLC Outreach Director, reports that the pantry has experienced record high demand (up to 50% more attendance) since late winter 2024. He also reports that local pantries have seen fewer food products come from Second Harvest, the main supplier to Dane Co food pantries, due to high demand throughout the county. GSLC has had to rely heavily on an internal pantry fund to maintain an adequate supply of food items on the pantry shelves. Additional funds are much-needed at this time. Can we at ORUCC help?

We invite ORUCC members to make monetary donations to the GSLC food pantry fund through our July Compassion Offering. Your donations will go toward direct purchase of food items that best meet the needs of food pantry clients. Please consider a generous donation to keep the GSLC food pantry well-stocked for those in need.

Additional ways that you can help:

Food, paper goods or personal items are also accepted year-round at the GSLC Donation Room during weekday hours.

-         Volunteer at the GSLC Food Pantry: Assist with registration, act as a host or help with stocking the shelves. Thursdays, 9:30am-Noon or 5:30pm-7pm. Familiarity with languages is a bonus, such as Spanish, Middle Eastern dialects, others. Contact: Rick rthomas@gslcwi.com or ORUCC contact Jane jfglaze@sbcglobal.net

-         Volunteer your time in the ORUCC Veggie Village garden where we tend and harvest fresh vegetables for the GSLC food pantry. Contact: LuAnn Greiner greinerlu@gmail.com

JUNE COMPASSION OFFERING

Casa Alitas

The compassion offering for June 2024 is Casa Alitas. Casa Alitas is a non-profit, immigrant welcome center near the border in Tucson, Arizona. Casa Alitas provides a warm welcome, food, clothing, and shelter for a few days for legal asylum seekers who have crossed the border. Casa Alitas provides services to 1,000 to 1,500 guests every day.

The ORUCC connection with Casa Alitas was prompted by a mission trip to the border in 2015. Since then, we have maintained a hands-on connection, through compassion offerings, clothing drives and volunteer time at Casa Alitas.

During the last year in particular, despite unpredictable funding allocations from the federal government, Casa Alitas was the only welcome center on the border that maintained its capacity to welcome all who arrived at its doors.

Casa Alitas needs our help now more than ever. Funds that we provide will keep people from being dropped off as street releases in the city of Tucson. All funds will provide direct services to immigrant families. Funds will

  • Pay for clothing and food provided by Casa Alitas;
  • Buy items for play bags for children; and
  • Pay for transportation to reunite families who have been separated at the border.

How Can We Have Meaningful Discussions with Others

    about Difficult Topics?

Featuring Robert Asen, the Stephen E. Lucas Professor of Rhetoric, Politics, and Culture in the Communication Arts Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

    Facilitator: Baxter Richardson

This presentation/discussion, while using the Israel-Palestine conflict as an example, will not focus on the content of that conflict, but rather will explore the approaches and strategies that we might employ in order to have meaningful discussions with others, including those we disagree with, about the conflict. These approaches, it is hoped, can also be used for other kinds of undertakings, such as Jewish-Christian dialogue.

Americans live in an increasingly polarized society in which we face difficult issues impacting our local communities and our wider worlds. These issues may address core values and commitments that connect us and divide us from others with similar and different viewpoints. Indeed, we may even feel internal tensions as we struggle to articulate coherent perspectives on complicated issues. This brief presentation and facilitated discussion will invite reflection on the possibilities for productive deliberation and dialogue across differences. We will consider the ethics, purposes, and implications of engaging different perspectives on potentially difficult issues. We will also reflect on our own values and commitments, including what we are willing to risk to engage different viewpoints.

Robert Asen is the Stephen E. Lucas Professor of Rhetoric, Politics, and Culture in the Communication Arts Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In his research, Asen explores the democratic possibilities of public debate and dialogue, as ordinary folks may connect with others to build diverse communities and support individuals, as well as the ways that public discourse may divide and scapegoat people and sustain unjust practices. He regularly teaches an undergraduate argument course that starts with the basic belief that we must be able to discuss our differences and that these differences can contribute to a dynamic and diverse society.

Funds will
  • Pay for clothing and food provided by Casa Alitas;
  • Buy items for play bags for children; and
  • Pay for transportation to reunite families who have been separated at the border.

    Please give generously. Thank you.

    You’re invited

    Antisemitism Then and Now:

    The Christian Origins and Legacy

    Facilitator: Baxter Richardson

This adult education session will be an inquiry – an attempt to answer one question: How does one explain the enduring reality of antisemitism in Christian cultures? Other questions we might explore: Is there some inherent quality of Christianity, or religion itself, that prevents us from freeing ourselves from the pernicious form of racism that we call antisemitism? Or is it possible that antisemitism is the manifestation of the human need to define who one is by who one is not? Or is it something else?

To help us understand the Christian origins and legacy, please read ahead of time and come prepared to discuss James Carroll’s article “Easter, Christianity, and Antisemitism” (2024) and excerpts by Martin Luther, “On the Jews and their Lies” (1543).

If time permits, we will consider how the Roman Catholic Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) have responded, officially, to antisemitism. Copies of “Nostra Aetate” (1965) and “A Declaration of the ELCA to the Jewish Community” (1993) will be available on June 2.

    MAY COMPASSION OFFERING

Showing Compassion for Children in Gaza

Our May Compassion Offering – Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA) — was identified and recommended by the ORUCC Palestine Justice Mission Team. After researching and considering many options, the Team unanimously approved sponsoring MECA as the Compassion Offering, in light of the current, urgent situation in Gaza. MECA has staff on site in Gaza to respond immediately and directly upon receiving our support.

MECA was founded in 1988 in Berkeley, California as a private, not-for-profit organization whose mission is to deliver vital supplies and humanitarian services to children in Gaza. As MECA’s work has progressed over the years, its activities have included providing direct aid to refugee children in Lebanon and Iraq; water projects in Gaza that bring clean water for children and their families; assistance to community organizations that help meet Palestinian children’s needs; scholarships for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank; and educational/cultural programs in the USA to increase understanding about the lives of children in the Middle East and the impact of US foreign policy on people in the region.

Compassion Offering funds raised in May will be directed entirely to MECA’s emergency appeal for the humanitarian needs of Gazan children and their families. Our donations will quickly provide food, water, healthcare and shelter for children in Gaza who are hungry, injured, orphaned and/or homeless.

At this session of Java & Jesus, we will discuss a video of a 2009 TED Talk by religious historian Karen Armstrong on the topic: “Let’s Revive the Golden Rule.”

Karen Armstrong is a British author and commentator of Irish Catholic descent known for her books on comparative religion. She is a former Roman Catholic sister who became a religious historian and author. Along the way, she moved from a conservative to a more liberal and mystical Christian faith. She attended St Anne’s College, Oxford, while in the convent, and majored in English. She left her order in 1969, while in college.

Among her many books are: A History of God (1993), which sketches the evolution of the concept of God in the three major monotheistic traditions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, along with some details on Buddhism and Hinduism; The Case for God (2009); Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life (2010); and The Lost Art of Scripture: Rescuing the Sacred Texts (2019).

Armstrong received the TED Prize in February 2008. She used that occasion to call for the creation of a Charter for Compassion, which was unveiled the following year.

Please read ahead of time and come prepared to discuss “Anti-Zionism Is Not the Same as Antisemitism. Here’s the History”

    by Benjamin Moser

    from Chistian Ethics Today.

With all the turmoil over the Israeli-Hamas (Palestinian) war, last December’s congressional resolution equating anti-Zionism with antisemitism and the subsequent student protests, we wonder how we should respond to the “anti-semetic” protesters on and off our nation’s campuses. This article gives a brief history of the difference between anti-Zionist and antisemetic behavior. Recently President Biden spoke out about the increase in antisemitism in the US while, at the same time, our nation is withholding military supplies from the Israeli government. Are these actions compatible or not? What should our response to this situation be? Can we oppose the Israeli actions while supporting the Jewish community? Join us for discussion!
