Programming for Children
May 21st

Nursery Care opens at 8:30. Marcia Beckett and Amalia Sherrill are ready to play with your little one. Please note: 5/21 is the LAST Sunday for Nursery Care until September. 
9am Sunday School: This Sunday, we’ll gather in the Bridges Room for some singing and then move to the Johnson Room next door to rehearse a drumming piece that we will play during worship. Anyone in K-8 is invited to join us! This is a very easy piece that everyone should be able to pick up quickly. Jadyn and Josie Gilbert will assist the children and Bethany Schultz will be with us to play the melody on her clarinet! 
This piece, “Many and Great,” will be played early in the service. When the children are released, they will move to the garden with Rachael Lancor to start planting! Hint: send your child in their “grubbies” this week! After worship, the children are invited to stay in the garden to work or find other outdoor tasks. (This Sunday is Work and Worship). 
May 28: No Nursery Care, Sunday School, or Children’s Programming
June 4: Last Day Celebration Sundae Sunday! Weather permitting, 9am Sunday School will meet outdoors. During worship, we’ll celebrate the many successes of the 2022-23 youth programming year and say Thank You to all of our Sunday School Guides and other youth leaders. Children will stay in worship that day. Following worship, we’ll celebrate with Ice Cream Sundaes! 
Summer Programming: Though we will not have scheduled Sunday School or Music Connections, there will be opportunities for the children to work in the garden during worship for our yearly, “Kids in the Garden” program. Rachael Lancor will oversee this fantastic program. 

MAY COMPASSION OFFERING
OutReach LGBTQ+ Community Center
OutReach LGBTQ+ Community Center has served the Madison area since 1973, providing community building, health and human services, and economic, social, and racial justice advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community and our allies. OutReach has staff advocates that offer peer support, information, and referral in three main areas: substance use and harm reduction, transgender services, and elder services (for those over age 50). We also host social and support groups for people from all across the LGBTQ+ community where people can come together to discuss their lives, learn new skills, or just watch a movie and have a good time! OutReach LGBTQ+ Community Center houses the Earl Greely Memorial Library, an over-4000 volume lending library of LGBTQ+ fiction and nonfiction, the David Bohnett Cybercenter, community meeting space, and a community pantry with food and personal essentials.
 
Funds raised will be used to support Willma’s Fund, a program of OutReach offering emergency financial assistance to LGBTQ+ adults in Dane County. Willma’s Fund was founded in 2011 by Donald Haar, a former employee of the Salvation Army and drag performer who goes by the name Willma Flynn-Stone. Donald recognized that LGBTQ+ people often face additional barriers when accessing support for homelessness or housing insecurity and saw a way to help (and get back into performing drag!). Since 2011, Willma’s Fund has awarded over $250,000 to over 500 people. In 2022 alone we awarded $50,000 to 120 people. We paid 35 people’s security deposits or first month’s rent, and provided over 400 nights of emergency shelter through short-term hotel stays. Willma’s Fund is a vital piece of our community’s efforts to protect its most vulnerable members.

Programming for Children
May 14th

Nursery Care opens at 8:30am. Kristin Muckian and Joey Miller. 
K-5 Sunday School starts at 9am. This week and next, we’ll explore the Books of the Prophets. As part of the opening conversation, the children will hear a story from the Godly Play series about Jonah and The Whale. We have some wonderful props that will bring the story to life! Stations will be centered around whales and water that day. Paul Vash and Karen Jaehnig will guide the children in their learning. 
Our programming year wraps up on June 4! Be sure to attend this day for a special celebration during Sunday School and the Worship Hour.

For this Sunday’s session, Java & Jesus participants are asked to watch and listen to a video of Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED talk on “The danger of a single story.” Her talk discusses the influence stories have on the way people view themselves and others, and describes how stories told over and over become a “single story” that can lead people to develop erroneous or misleading preconceptions about other people and cultures. These “single stories” come to control the narratives about other people and cultures and help maintain the power of those who propagate them.

After practicing our skills in finding a bible verse, the children will have the opportunity to solve a cryptogram, write their own poem/psalm, and find a proverb in the sand. Jadyn Gilbert and Julie Mazer will guide the children in their learning.

Nursery Care opens at 8:30am. Antonia and Joey are ready to play with your little one! This is Antonia’s last Sunday, so we will bless her during church!
The week we’ve been preparing for has arrived! This Sunday, we will gather at 9am in the Bridges Room. Once everyone has arrived, we will move to the sanctuary to rehearse our ukulele songs with TruFunction. We’ll rehearse “When the Saints Go Marching In,” and “I Can See Clearly Now,” a few times and then likely move back to the Bridges Room for some craft/playtime before worship. 
The service will begin with “When the Saints Go Marching In.” Your child will be on the platform at the start of worship. We’re still sorting out the kinks of when “I Can See Clearly Now” will happen. We’ll be able to practice that transition on Sunday morning. Your child will stay for the whole service and should sit with you in the congregation. 
If your child has their own ukulele, please remember to bring it with you on Sunday. 
April Compassion Offering
UCC CAMPS IN WISCONSIN
This month our compassion offering is for our UCC camps in Wisconsin. We are so fortunate to have 3 amazing camps, each in a different setting and each offering unique programs: Moon Beach in the North Woods, Daycholah on Green Lake and Cedar Valley in Washington County. 
 
Camps provide sacred places which enhance our spiritual lives. The experience of living with others builds stronger connections. Camps can nourish us, provide respite so we can return to our daily lives refreshed and ready to serve others. By spending times in the out-of-doors we better appreciate the gifts of creation and therefore are eager to care for the earth. 
 
Our UCC camps also offer many volunteer opportunities, whether it be work projects or assisting at a camp session like Camp AweSum for families touched by autism.
 
Our camps need our volunteer and financial support. Please click on the link below to learn more about our sacred sites.

Programming for Children
April 23rd
Nursery Care opens at 8:30am. Antonia and Joey are ready to play with your little one!
Sunday School 9:00 am: This Sunday, the children will participate in their final guided labyrinth walk of the programming year. Parents and caregivers, you are invited as well! Please consider joining us in the Bridges Room at 9am for a gathering conversation. Each family will have the opportunity to walk a small labyrinth in the adjacent Johnson Room. Sand, coloring, finger labyrinths, and other mindful activities will be available in the Bridges Room while you wait for your turn. To maximize our time and to not feel rushed, the children will not attend service this Sunday. We’ll move directly to Music Connections once all families have enjoyed the labyrinth. 
Following service, please plan to enjoy the art gallery in Friendship Hall. Following our last labyrinth walk, the children created Earth Day images prompted by the question, ”what can we do to care for creation?” This Sunday, the Care of Creation Team will display those images along with postcards to send to our legislators with specific requests of what they can do to care for the earth. 
Next week, there will not be Sunday School. But, children should plan to attend the 9am TruFunction rehearsal.  
Music Connections: This Sunday, the children will move directly from Sunday School to Music Connections. K-5 families, I will assist with the transition since we are moving from the family labyrinth walk to music. Middle School Youth are invited to wait for me in Friendship Hall. Any middle schoolers participating in the “youth newsletter” presentation are welcome to join us after that segment in the service. 
Once together, we will rehearse our ukulele songs for the TruFunction performance downstairs in the Bonhoeffer Room. Once we are warmed up, we will move to the upstairs Music Room to rehearse with TruFunction. After service, you will either find us there, the Bridges Room, or back downstairs. Jen Walker will be our Music Connections Volunteer. 
Next week, the children and youth will stay in service for our performance with TruFunction. Music Connections will not be offered that day.

Camps can nourish us, provide respite so we can return to our daily lives refreshed and ready to serve others. April 9th
This week, we will celebrate Easter Sunday with the congregation at 10am! There will not be 9am Sunday School or 10am Music Connections. There will, however, be some make-and-take crafts available in Friendship Hall when the children are released during the service. Our annual Easter Egg Hunt will start promptly after worship. Children are welcome to bring their own Easter Egg Basket - or decorate a bag during our craft time.

April Compassion Offering
UCC CAMPS IN WISCONSIN
This month our compassion offering is for our UCC camps in Wisconsin. We are so fortunate to have 3 amazing camps, each in a different setting and each offering unique programs: Moon Beach in the North Woods, Daycholah on Green Lake and Cedar Valley in Washington County.

Programming for Children
April 2nd
Nursery Care:Nursery Care opens at 8:30am. Antonia and Amalia are ready to play with your little one!
K-5 Sunday School starts at 9am. This week, we continue our preparation for “The Mystery of Easter.” Using the “Faces of Easter” curriculum from Godly Play, we will view beautiful images of Jesus and hear stories about his birth, childhood, and how he grew to be a leader. Following the stories, the children will have time to explore sand, observe a variety of crosses, design their own cross, and complete a word search. We’ll close with a conversation about the last supper and communion. Paul Vash, Karen Jaehnig, and Sally Allen will guide the children in their learning. 
Looking ahead, there is no Sunday School programming on Easter Sunday. But, your family is invited to come at the 10am hour on 4/9 for “Make and Take Crafts.
Music Connections 10am This Palm Sunday, the children begin in church with you and then they are invited for a special Bell demo with Al and Deanna Blanchard! This was a big hit last time we did it. It is wonderful to introduce our children to the music and instruments of the church. The children will return to the Worship Hall for the end of service for communion.

Support Heart Room
Heart Room has supported 15 families and 60 children to find and keep stable housing for long-term thriving. ORUCC members have contributed or pledged funds that support three years of rental assistance per family. Coupled with other supports from professional partners, families then can meet their goals for thriving. 
 
The Heart Room Mission Team thanks you for pledges and contributions of all sizes. Your recent pledge statement from the church will let you know any balance on the Heart Room pledge for the eight currently enrolled families. We’ll start in Friendship Hall with some singing together and then Pastor Julia Burkey will lead the children in a joyful, creative “Dancing the Labyrinth” experience. We’ll close with some free playtime and a snack in the Bridges Room. Because Friendship Hall will be in use, you are welcome to enjoy your coffee (found on a cart in the hallway) in Crossroads, the downstairs Bonhoeffer Room, or the Johnson Room. Julia, Sally Allen, and Julie Mazer will guide the children in their learning.

March 5th
Nursery Care: Nursery Care opens at 8:30am. Antonia and Amalia are ready to play with your little one!
K-5 Sunday School starts at 9am: This week, we will study the Books of History. After practicing our skills in finding a bible verse, the children will have the opportunity to make finger puppets to accompany the story of Esther, complete a worksheet, and take characters on a journey to the promised land in the sand station. Following the stations, they’ll hear the second part of the story of Esther, from the Book of Esther. It is an engaging, rags to riches, fairy-tale-like story! Karen Jaehnig, and Jadyn and Josie Gilbert will guide the children in their learning. 
Music Connections 10am: This week the children will begin the 10 o’clock hour in the sanctuary with you. When they are dismissed for Music Connections, we will move to the downstairs Bonhoeffer Room for some ukulele playing and mixed instrument soundscapes based on the Genesis Creation Story (complementary to what the children have recently studied in Sunday School). Rebecca Erickson will be our Music Connections volunteer. 
Save The Date! April 30, the children are invited to play two songs with TruFunction! We’ll play one easy song and a harder song for those ready for a challenge. Learn about white christian nationalism
White christian nationalists are claiming to speak for Christians when they attack racial diversity, LGBTQ rights, abortion, and election results. ORUCC member Rev. Dr. David Anderman will lead an eight-week study group on Tuesday mornings 10:30-12 from February 28-April 25 and Thursday evenings March 2- April 27. The study group will be hybrid (in person and virtual on Zoom) in the Swan seminar room at ORUCC. The Racial Justice Mission Team has been discussing this issue for over a year and we think it is time to bring it to the congregation. We asked David to write a statement about this issue for the ORUCC website.

Nursery Care: opens at 8:30am. Antonia and Amalia are ready to play with your little one!
K-5 Sunday School starts at 9am & 10am Labyrinth: Sunday School will be a little different this week. At 9am, the children will have the opportunity to walk a labyrinth with the Labyrinth Team (Chris Thomas and Betty Day), Paul Vash, and me. Any available Owlets are invited to join us as there is no OWL class that morning. Snow permitting, the labyrinth team will make an outdoor labyrinth. PLEASE DRESS YOUR CHILD IN WARM CLOTHES AND BOOTS IN THE EVENT WE AE OUTDOORS!!! Otherwise, we will use a smaller labyrinth downstairs in the Bonhoeffer Room. Either way, the children will work on environmental images for the Care of Creation’s spring postcard campaign following the walk. 
To give us ample time and to not feel rushed, the children will start at 9am and then continue into the 10 o’clock hour. That means that the children will not attend service that day.

Worker Justice Wisconsin
Worker Justice Wisconsin (WJW) is a Madison-based nonprofit that builds collective worker power together with faith and labor allies. Our worker center educates and empowers employees who do not have a union. We help them file complaints with state agencies, incubate worker-owned cooperatives, and train workers to organize their coworkers. With a mostly bilingual staff, WJW pays special attention to the Spanish-speaking, immigrant working class. In 2022, WJW trained 140 workers, helped recover $121,560.11 in previously owed but unpaid wages, organized two job sites, and incubated three cooperatives. Of the 200+ workers who opened cases in 2022, over 90% were immigrants, and 89% were Latinx. 
 
February’s Compassion Offering will be deposited in the WJW Solidarity Fund. The Fund encourages workers to engage in job site organizing by providing a basic financial safety net. If a worker is retaliated against or fired by their employer for engaging in legally protected organizing activity, or if a workforce decides to go on strike, they can receive up to 50% of their income from the fund (so long as funds last and up to two months). The Fund is crucial to bolstering workers’ bargaining power. It is not charity. It is a direct contribution to workers’ struggle to overcome structural inequality.

Nursery Care opens at 8:30am. Lily and Joey are ready to play with your little one!
Sunday School: K-5 Sunday School starts at 9am. This week, we will continue our study of the five “Books of Law.” After practicing our skills in finding a bible verse the children will have the opportunity to play some educational bible games, complete their creation story water color painting, search for some of the animals Noah would have brought along on the ark in the sandbox, and decorate a bible bookmark. Paul Vash and Jen Walker will guide the children in their learning. 
All of the content the children will experience comes from the curriculum resource, “Learning to Use My Bible.” Should you ever wish to continue this study at home, Julie Mazer highly recommends this user friendly student resource: https://tinyurl.com/74n8nmj6 She has one on hand if you would ever like to peek at it before purchasing. 
Music Connections: This week the children will begin the 10 o’clock hour in the sanctuary. When they are dismissed for Music Connections, we will move to the downstairs Bonhoeffer Room for a ukulele jam. This April, we are invited to play two songs with TruFunction! So, we’ll be revisiting the instrument many times throughout the next few months and mastering some new chords. Two weeks ago, Julie Mazer noticed that a few children felt apprehensive and discouraged from the challenge of this instrument. Before Music Connections, Julie encourages parents to have a family chat about overcoming challenges and perseverance. Julie assures parents that she will work with each child to make modifications and adaptations based on their skills and abilities. This is meant to be a low pressure, fun way to learn a new accessible musical skill. As always, no one will be forced to perform, but everyone will be encouraged to participate in whatever way they are comfortable. 
Looking ahead, Julie will be out of town on 2/19. Marcia Beckett is on deck to lead an art experience with the children. Julie will be back again on 2/26 and for all of March.

This Sunday we will be reflecting on the selection “Living Waters (Down in the River to Pray),” from Daniel Cooperrider’s inspired book Speak with the Earth and It Will Teach You, A Field Guide to the Bible.
The book its organized into four parts, one for each of the creation elements of water, fire, earth, and air. The attached selection is found in Part I – Rivers, and is the third selection connected to the water element. Of interest, ORUCC’s Care of Creation Mission Team is preparing for a full book discussion in the spring, with four sessions to discuss the four parts of the book.
Daniel describes his book as a “braided narrative.” He says, “the three most prominent strands that I weave are: 1) Biblical interpretation; 2) Philosophy or literature or science; 3) personal experience of being in nature and being in conversation with the elements of nature.”
These strands are aligned with many of the kinds of discussion we pursue at Java and Jesus. We look forward to reflecting together on this selection.

Programming for Children
January 29th
Nursery Care opens at 8:30. Antonia and Joey are ready to play with your little one!
K-5 Sunday School starts at 9am. This week, we will revisit the “What is the Bible?” lesson and choice stations from last Sunday. This repetition will give those that were not in attendance the opportunity to learn the material and give those that were in attendance the opportunity to try a different station or work deeper with the material. Jadyn Gilbert, Josie Gilbert, and Sally Allen will guide the children in their learning. 
All of the content your child will experience comes from the curriculum resource, “Learnjng to Use My Bible.” This semester, we will focus on books and lessons from the Old Testament. We begin our exploration of the Bible by identifying different sections, finding different bible verses, learning American Sign Language for a bible verse, and even making a “scroll.” We’ll use the Bibles we have on hand in the classroom for this study. Certainly, if your child has a Bible that they would like to bring to church, they are welcome to do so! Or, if you would like to purchase a Bible for your child, please let me know and I can make some recommendations.  
Music Connections: This week the children will begin the 10 o’clock hour in the sanctuary with you. When they are dismissed for Music Connections, we will move to the downstairs Bonhoeffer Room to complete a letter that they will send to our partner school in Gainesville, Georgia as part of the Peace Crane Project. We will mail our letters and cranes to them; and, they will mail back letters and cranes. Paul Vash will be our Music Connections Volunteer. Any time that remains will be spent with our ukuleles. Your child is welcome to bring theirs from home if they have one! This April, we are invited to play two songs with TruFunction! So, we’ll be revisiting the instrument many times throughout the next few months and mastering some new chords. Julie Mazer is in need of Music Connections volunteers, January-May. The sermon is entitled “Unfulfilled Dreams,” and it based on a verse spoken by King Solomon that appears twice in the Old Testament—in 1 Kings 8:18 and in 2 Chronicles 6:8 in reference to the building of a great Temple in Jerusalem:

This Sunday in the church calendar is Epiphany. The Feast of the Epiphany commemorates the manifestation of Christ to the Magi who came to Jerusalem asking “Where is the newborn King of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising.”

 

The earliest celebrations of this feast recalled not only the manifestation to the Magi but Christ’s Birth, but his Baptism by John in the Jordan River and his first Miracle at Cana where water was changed into wine. We’ll explore Gospel passages describing those events.

Children’s Programming:

Kindergarten-5th grade will complete their Advent study. We have arrived at Epiphany. The children will hear the story of the Magi and have the opportunity to sniff frankincense and myrrh essential oils. Following the stories, the children will be invited to make a star to symbolize the star the Magi followed. Josie and Jadyn Gilbert and Sally Allen will lead them through the experience. 

Looking Ahead….NO SUNDAY SCHOOL 1/15 for the All Church Retreat. Sunday School Resumes on 1/22 with the “Learning to Use My Bible” curriculum. 

10:00 am The Labyrinth Team will work the children downstairs starting at 10am.

4pm Children’s Service: A Celebration of Peace The children and youth will lead us with music that Julie Mazer & Rob Martens have helped them prepare. This service will be mask optional. TruFunction will play music for this wonderful celebration. Be ready to feel a sense of peace wash over you and to feel your heart opened. Service will be live-streamed on our YouTube channel. According to our covenant, we welcome former associate pastor Tammy Martens to join us in-person for this special worship service.

7pm Christmas Eve Service: Stars & Midwives We join together with Madison Mennonite Church and the ORUCC Choir for this contemplative service. Pastor Julia, Pastor Valerie & Pastor Ken will lead us in worship with lay readers sharing poetry and scripture. In this service we will imagine ourselves as midwives for the Christ Child and as bearers of the stars of light, each a twinkling star within the vast and amazing cosmos. For this service we will require masks KN95 or the like, as we do with all other regular ORUCC services and events. This service will be live-streamed on our YouTube channel.

10am Sunday Christmas Day December 25: Pastor Julia Burkey leads a casual and joyful service with David Anderman playing Christmas hymns on the piano. We are pivoting away from a Bethlehem themed service, to an interactive hymn sing and with nativity reflection. You are invited to bring a character or figures from your creche or Christmas Nativity scene for the altar that represents who in the story you feel most connected to this year. We will have extra figures too. Our 10am service will not be live-streamed, so our wonderful tech folks can enjoy being with their families.

As we continue our advent journey together, we will turn to the stories leading up to the birth of Jesus as found in the first chapter of Luke. A portion of those stories was beautifully shared by Pastor Julia last Sunday. We will explore these and additional stories from various perspectives.
In this chapter of Luke, stories tell of the angel Gabriel’s visits to Zacharias and Mary to announce the births of John and Jesus. We will explore the different reactions (highlighted in gold) by Zacharias and Mary and what meaning we might derive from each. We will continue with Mary and Elizabeth’s beloved declarations (highlighted in blue) of faith and acceptance, blessings, joy and dedication and will then turn to Mary and Zacharias declarations of prophesy (highlighted in purple).
What do each of these mean to us as we read, reflect, and meditate on these stories?

December Compassion Offering
National UCC Christmas Fund
United Church of Christ retired clergy, servants of the church, have spent lifetimes baptizing and blessing, teaching and preaching, marrying and burying, and comforting and empowering God’s people. The UCC Christmas Fund for Veterans of the Cross gives us the opportunity to sustain and empower them. Gifts to the fund help retired clergy, church staff, and their families supplement pension benefits, pay bills, maintain health insurance, supplement health benefits, and meet emergency needs. In 2021, gifts to the Christmas Fund enabled pension supplementation for 231 retired clergy and lay employees, health benefit supplementation for 87 retired clergy and lay employees, emergency grants for 53 individuals and families, and Christmas “thank you” gift checks to 509 retired clergy and lay employees. Gifts to the Christmas fund in 2022 will make a real difference in the lives of retired clergy church staff, and their families, easing the anxiety of constant financial worries.

Kindergarten-5th grade will begin their Advent study. This week, they will hear the classic story of the Prophets, the Holy Family, and the Shepherds. That day we will light the pink, “Shepherd” candle. This candle reflects the Joy that comes with Jesus’ arrival. Bonus points if you wear pink on Sunday! They will also have an opportunity to make a card for a church elder. Sally Allen, Jen Walker, and Jill Westberg will lead them through the experience. 

Ph.D. Astro-Physics Student Isaac presents at 9am TOMORROW Sunday Dec 11th on the science and significance of our Advent Theme!
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has propelled astrophysics into a new era: From observing the formation of the first galaxies, measuring the chemical composition of exoplanet atmospheres, to uncovering hidden stars, JWST is simultaneously pushing and scrutinizing our understanding of the universe. 
 
However, we reside on the shoulders of giants. JWST builds from the legacies of pioneering scientists and telescopes, so it is equally imperative for us to understand what lead to JWST as is understanding the discoveries made with JWST. We will trace the field of astronomy through centuries, underlining the people and discoveries that guided us to developing and launching the largest, most advanced space telescope to date.
The technological advancements can be seen throughout the entirety of the telescope.  With cameras and spectrographs tailored for the infrared, gold-plated beryllium mirrors, and numerous sun shields cooling the telescope to near absolute zero, we will examine the complex and intriguing design of JWST along with the primary instruments on board the spacecraft. 
The discoveries from JWST made within hours of the first data release were samples of what is to come. Since first light, programs observing for hundreds to thousands of hours have begun, with scientists just now dissecting the data. JWST is still in its infancy, so we will examine the discoveries to date, but also for what is to come as our data exponentially grows.
Bio:

My name is Isaac Laseter. I grew up outside a small town in southern Missouri but ended up studying at the University of Texas – Austin. After graduating with a B.S. in physics and a B.S. in Astronomy, I headed up north to the University of Wisconsin – Madison for a Ph.D. in astrophysics. I currently am in the 3rd year of my Ph.D. Research-wise, I am an observational cosmologist focusing on the evolution of galaxies from the earliest times. I am a member of the Near-Infrared Spectrograph team, which is a primary team for the James Webb Space Telescope with thousand-plus hours of observational time. Outside of research, I am a skydiving instructor on the weekends and enjoy weightlifting.

United Church of Christ retired clergy, servants of the church, have spent lifetimes baptizing and blessing, teaching and preaching, marrying and burying, and comforting and empowering God’s people. The UCC Christmas Fund for Veterans of the Cross gives us the opportunity to sustain and empower them. Gifts to the fund help retired clergy, church staff, and their families supplement pension benefits, pay bills, maintain health insurance, supplement health benefits, and meet emergency needs. In 2021, gifts to the Christmas Fund enabled pension supplementation for 231 retired clergy and lay employees, health benefit supplementation for 87 retired clergy and lay employees, emergency grants for 53 individuals and families, and Christmas “thank you” gift checks to 509 retired clergy and lay employees. Gifts to the Christmas fund in 2022 will make a real difference in the lives of retired clergy church staff, and their families, easing the anxiety of constant financial worries.

We have the makings for 25 DIY Advent Wreaths with live greens and Hygge weekly Advent Devotionals. Join Pastor Julia in Friendship Hall for making our own wreaths.
NO Nursery Care this week. Children under age five are invited to enjoy the nursery alongside their parents. Please tidy-up the room before leaving.
NO Sunday School for Kindergarten-5th grade. Instead, join Julia Burkey in Friendship Hall for our 2nd annual Advent Wreath making event! All supplies will be provided for one wreath per family. Though, if you have your wreath mold from last year, please bring it with you.
December 4-18, the children will learn the classic Advent stories and make holiday cards for our elders. Stay tuned for more details next week.

In keeping with the Advent preaching theme of “The Stars, Christ Child and Cosmos in Conversation,” we will be exploring our sense of wonder and awe at our place in this incredible creation. How did all this beauty and chaos come to be? What is our purpose in it?
 
As Christians we are called to measure our lives by the example given by Jesus the Christ. How does the story of Jesus inform us in our response to the constant revelation of new wonders revealed by scientific research? Do the birth stories of the Bible still have meaning in this era? Do new astronomical discoveries diminish the awe and wonder that we felt as children when we heard of the angel’s message or does it burnish an already beautiful story with even greater awe and thanksgiving?
 
Advent is the season of preparation for the arrival of the Messiah. Let’s start our preparation by reading the birth stories in Matthew and Luke as found in the NRSV translation. How did something so ordinary as the birth of a child become the story of hope and awe that we have today? How does light play a role in the stories? In the same way, how could an event such as the “Big Bang” result in the universe we see in the James Webb telescope pictures?

This week’s focus is: ”Thanksgiving” In this practice, the children will be invited to consider what they are thankful for in their physical world. Any idea is welcome, even simple things like our walls! “I am thankful for the walls because they help create our space.” At the art station, they will create a thanksgiving collage. And, at the world station they will be invited to paint (with watercolors) a scene of the many things they are thankful for in God’s creation. Paul Vash, Jadyn Gilbert, Karen Jaehnig will guide them through the discussion and active stations.
Looking ahead, NO Sunday School next Sunday, 11/27. Instead, join Julia Burkey in Friendship Hall for our 2nd annual Advent Wreath making event.

This week’s focus is: ”Intercession” In this practice, the children will be invited to reflect upon their week and create prayers for the world, their family, friends, or a pet. They will also continue working on their “Examen Ropes” by selecting beads to symbolize those emotions and have the opportunity to paint a stone to remember their ”Breath Prayer” (a simple prayer you can think of any time you take a breath). Jadyn Gilbert and Karen Jaehnig will guide them through the discussion and active stations.

Claiborne is also a social activist, advocating for nonviolence and service to the poor.

Programming for Children
October 30th
No Nursery Care this week. Children under age five are invited to enjoy the nursery alongside their parents. Please tidy-up the room before leaving.
PreK-2nd grade students will enjoy a story with Jill Westberg and Karen Jaehnig. Children under the age of 5 are invited to stay as long as they are able with a parent.
3rd-5th Grade will continue their focus on Prayer. This week, they will learn how to write a “Breath Prayer” and have an opportunity to paint a cross on a small stone. The children will be invited to carry this stone with them throughout the week as a reminder to pause and say their breath prayer in times of worry or stress. This will be a very easy, light, quick, painting experience. Regardless, please do not send your children in their Sunday best. Sally Allen and Paul Vash will guide them through the discussion and active stations.

The mission of The Crossing is to provide a Christian campus ministry where students can explore, question, understand, develop and affirm their relationship to God, each other and the world. This mission includes being a diverse and theologically open-minded Christian ministry that allows members of the university community the freedom to grasp anew the love and grace of God through an understanding of, and commitment to, living the gospel of Jesus Christ with a particular focus on his life and teachings. In short, The Crossing is a place where students can belong in community, explore their faith, and become their authentic selves.
At The Crossing when we say “ALL ARE WELCOME”, we mean it. The Crossing is a Reconciling in Christ, Open, Welcoming and Affirming ministry. We celebrate God’s diversity in sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, different abilities, faith tradition or lack of faith, national origin, racial, ethnic and economic background and any other difference.
During the 2021-2022 academic year The Crossing hosted around 125 students per week in the study/community spaces and over 75 students participated in worship and small group programs. In addition, The Crossing fed around 150 students per week through the Food Recovery Network and the Frozen Meal Program, not including the hundreds of students and community members that our longtime friends from Slow Food UW host in the building.
Events planned for this Fall include:
  • Welcome Back Pie Extravaganza & Concert
  • Open Mic Night
  • Weekly Dinner + Worship
  • Weekly Bible Study
  • Fellowship & support groups for Freshman and Graduate students
  • Queer Students of Faith exploring queer theology
  • Food Recovery Meals — Free hot meals are served on Tuesday evenings & Friday lunch-time
  • UW Frozen Meals — Frozen meals from the UW dining halls are delivered weekly; available when the building is open

Programming for Children
October 23rd
This Sunday during worship some children will share music they have prepared during their reflection on “Peace” this season during Music Connections!
PreK-2nd grade students will enjoy music at 9:00 and then listen to s story with Jill Westberg and Josie Gilbert. Children under the age of 5 are invited to stay as long as they are able and then transfer to the nursery to play with Antonia Wuschner and Amalia Sherrill.
3rd-5th Grade will begin a new module focusing on “Prayer.” This module will help children to develop specific skills and tools for a life of prayer. This week, they will practice silence and listening to God. Sally Allen and Paul Vash will guide them through the discussion and active stations. Be sure to stop in and see the PEACE mobile the children made during the Peacemaker module. (See attached photo).
We now have some quiet Craft Playtime materials in Crossroads (the area between the Sanctuary and Friendship Hall) for your young children. Coloring books, construction paper, stickers, a puzzle, etc. will be offered. Parents, please supervise your children and return any materials you use to the bookshelf after worship. 
Looking ahead: Do you have any magazines with positive words and phrases and/or pictures of food? O Magazine, Runner’s World, National Geographic, Food Network, etc? In November, 3-5 will create a Thanksgiving collage. I’m looking for magazines that might work for this project. If you have some to share, please bring them to the Bridges Room or leave in the office with my name on them. Thanks!

Appeal from the United Church of Christ
for Pakistan
Following massive flooding across nearly three-quarters of the country, the United Church of Christ is issuing an appeal in support of the people of Pakistan. Pakistan has been enduring severe monsoon weather since June, with rainfall equivalent to 2.9 times the national 30-year average. To date, more than half of the country’s 160 districts have been declared ‘calamity hit’ by the government, a number that is expected to increase as rain and flooding continues.
 
With more than 33 million people affected by the flooding so far and an estimated 6.4 million in need of humanitarian assistance, this response is greatly needed. Through our membership in the ACT Alliance and contributions to its Rapid Response Fund, the United Church of Christ is already supporting early relief efforts. Emergency food and water, medical supplies, temporary shelter kits, and protective services are being offered by ACT members Community World Service Asia and Norwegian Church Aid.
 
Your gift to the United Church of Christ’s Pakistan Response Fund will help maintain this relief work and support the long-term recovery for vulnerable persons and affected communities. Farmers and livestock owners will receive the seeds, feed, and vaccines they need to restore their livelihoods. Pregnant women – of whom an estimated 650,000 are affected – will receive maternal health services. Protection services will ensure the creation of safe spaces for children and other vulnerable populations. Psychosocial support and trauma resources will be provided. Through our work with global partners and the ACT Alliance, your gift will be joined with others to bring hope, healing, and a helping hand to our neighbors in Pakistan.

On several Sundays this fall, members of our congregation are engaging in Storytelling Sessions. In those sessions, Pastor Julia and members of our visioning team are using the Appreciative Inquiry process to guide us in interviewing each other about what we value. Those discussions are focusing on what we value about ourselves, each other, and ORUCC, and aim to help us discern where God is guiding us into the future.
This Sunday, Java & Jesus will examine the basics of the Appreciative Inquiry (AI) process. The Appreciative Inquiry process allows for the good, the true, the beautiful of our past to be carried forward into the future. The basis of the process is storytelling and one-on-one interviews. This week’s reading explains key components of the appreciative inquiry process, but we will also want to focus on our experience of the process.

3rd-5th Grade will continue their Peacemaker exploration for the last week before they start their prayer module. Last week, they explored saying I’m sorry and this week they will explore the courage it takes to be a peace-maker with the amazing story of Ruby Bridges.

Sharing Our Stories October 9th
All Church Visioning Session

Bundle up and join us for some un-masked time and fresh air as Pastor Julia and members of our visioning team
use the Appreciative Inquiry process to guide us in interviewing each other about what we value. We will discuss what we value about ourselves, each other and ORUCC, to help us discern where God is guiding us into the future.

Please respond to this email if you are available. Coffee and light snack provided.) will share that Jesus modeled kindness towards everyone. At that time, tax collectors were seen as wrongdoers. Instead, Jesus opened his home and served a meal to the tax collectors. Children under the age of 5 are invited to stay as long as they are able and then transfer to the nursery to play with Antonia Wuschner and Joey Miller.
3rd-5th Grade will continue their Peacemaker exploration. Last week, they explored forgiveness. This week, they will talk about another important piece of becoming a peacemaker - saying I’m sorry. Through a variety of active stations, they will consider how to say “I’m Sorry” and the power of those words. Paul Vash and Jen Walker will guide them through the process.

Safe Sanctuary Training for Youth Volunteers

At Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ, we believe that our church should be a safe sanctuary for all those who come in good faith. Most importantly, it should be a safe sanctuary for the children and youth who are entrusted to us.
Toward this goal, our congregation has adopted a Safe Sanctuary policy: a set of policies, procedures, and educational programs to reduce the possibility of child sexual or physical abuse, or any type of sexual misconduct or harassment from occurring in our congregation. These policies express our keen interest in protecting our children and youth, while maintaining the trusting atmosphere of our congregation for the entire congregation, adults and children alike.
On Sunday, Oct. 2 at 9:00 AM, we will conduct our annual Safe Sanctuary training program. Every volunteer who works with kids and youth will need to receive the training (which involves reviewing and discussing the policy) before helping out in the kids’ programming. It should take approximately 30 minutes. Thank you to our volunteers for helping to make ORUCC a welcoming and safe space for our youth!

On Sunday, Oct. 2nd, our Sunday School children will be discussing “The Courage to Forgive,” and considering the story of the Prodigal Son, along with Matthew 18:21-22:
“Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.’”
The teacher will share, “When we forgive someone who has hurt us, we are being a peacemaker. Is there anyone you need to forgive? Are there any grudges you carry? What does it feel like when you carry a grudge?”
In our session of Java & Jesus this Sunday, let’s have an open honest conversation about forgiveness!

Programming for Children
October 2nd
PreK-2nd grade students will enjoy music at 9:00 and then hear another story about the time when Jesus was at the Sea of Galilee. Jill Westberg and Josie Gilbert will share that Jesus modeled kindness towards people with disabled. Jesus even had the power to heal a man who was paralyzed! Children under the age of 5 are invited to stay as long as they are able and then transfer to the nursery to play with Antonia Wuschner and Amalia Sherrill.
3rd-5th Grade will continue their Peacemaker exploration. Last week, they explored giving their anger to God. This week, they will talk about another important piece of becoming a peacemaker - forgiveness. Through a variety of active stations, they will consider peace and forgiveness. Sally Allen and Jadyn Gilbert will guide them through the process.
Music Connections: This week, children in grades 2nd-5th + (middle schoolers and high schoolers are welcome to attend as a participant or helper) are invited to play hand chimes after the children’s moment. Additionally, we will continue our rhythmic and spoken exploration of the scripture, “Be Still and Know that God is Peace.” Chris Thomas is our Music Connections volunteer, this week.

The Crossing Campus Ministry
The Crossing is a progressive Christian campus ministry on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. The mission of The Crossing is to provide a Christian campus ministry where students can explore, question, understand, develop and affirm their relationship to God, each other and the world. This mission includes being a diverse and theologically open-minded Christian ministry that allows members of the university community the freedom to grasp anew the love and grace of God through an understanding of, and commitment to, living the gospel of Jesus Christ with a particular focus on his life and teachings. In short, The Crossing is a place where students can belong in community, explore their faith, and become their authentic selves.
At The Crossing when we say “ALL ARE WELCOME”, we mean it. The Crossing is a Reconciling in Christ, Open, Welcoming and Affirming ministry. We celebrate God’s diversity in sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, different abilities, faith tradition or lack of faith, national origin, racial, ethnic and economic background and any other difference.
During the 2021-2022 academic year The Crossing hosted around 125 students per week in the study/community spaces and over 75 students participated in worship and small group programs. In addition, The Crossing fed around 150 students per week through the Food Recovery Network and the Frozen Meal Program, not including the hundreds of students and community members that our longtime friends from Slow Food UW host in the building.

Appeal from the United Church of Christ
for Pakistan
Following massive flooding across nearly three-quarters of the country, the United Church of Christ is issuing an appeal in support of the people of Pakistan. Pakistan has been enduring severe monsoon weather since June, with rainfall equivalent to 2.9 times the national 30-year average. To date, more than half of the country’s 160 districts have been declared ‘calamity hit’ by the government, a number that is expected to increase as rain and flooding continues.
 
With more than 33 million people affected by the flooding so far and an estimated 6.4 million in need of humanitarian assistance, this response is greatly needed. Through our membership in the ACT Alliance and contributions to its Rapid Response Fund, the United Church of Christ is already supporting early relief efforts. Emergency food and water, medical supplies, temporary shelter kits, and protective services are being offered by ACT members Community World Service Asia and Norwegian Church Aid.
 
Your gift to the United Church of Christ’s Pakistan Response Fund will help maintain this relief work and support the long-term recovery for vulnerable persons and affected communities. Farmers and livestock owners will receive the seeds, feed, and vaccines they need to restore their livelihoods. Pregnant women – of whom an estimated 650,000 are affected – will receive maternal health services. Protection services will ensure the creation of safe spaces for children and other vulnerable populations. Psychosocial support and trauma resources will be provided. Through our work with global partners and the ACT Alliance, your gift will be joined with others to bring hope, healing, and a helping hand to our neighbors in Pakistan.

Discussion of Abortion Rights
September 25 at 9am Friendship Hall
Mike Murray, VP of Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin (PPWI), and Rabbi Bonnie Margulis, Chair of the Wisconsin Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice WI-RCRC), will present on the current status of abortion access in Wisconsin. The presentation from PPWI will include a discussion of the current legal and legislative landscape, information on medical and surgical abortions and how PPWI is currently serving its patients to fill the needs. WI-RCRC will discuss the history of faith support for reproductive justice, the current status of organizing taking place, and plans currently in process for meeting patient needs through the faith community. Children and Youth Programming for September 25th
PreK-2nd grade students will enjoy music at 9:00 and then hear another story about the time when Jesus was at the Sea of Galilee. Jill Westberg and Josie Gilbert will share that Jesus modeled kindness towards children and the poor. His way of teaching through example was seen as revolutionary and inspired others to spread the word. Children under the age of 5 are invited to stay as long as they are able and then transfer to the nursery to play with Antonia Wuschner and Amalia Sherrill.
3rd-5th Grade will continue their Peacemaker exploration. Last week, they talked about listening with our whole bodies and trying to really pay attention to someone when they are talking. This week, they will talk about another important piece of becoming a peacemaker - what we do when we get angry. Through a variety of active stations, they will learn how to share their angry feelings with God. Paul Vash and Jadyn Gilbert will guide them through the process.
Music Connections: This week, children in grades 2nd-5th + (middle schoolers and high schoolers are welcome to attend as a participant or helper) are invited to play xylophones with Julie Mazer after the children’s moment. Additionally, we will continue our rhythmic and spoken exploration of the scripture, “Be Still and Know that God is Peace.” Save the date for Sunday, October 23. That day, we’ll share music that we’ve developed on that passage during worship.

JustDane (formerly Madison-area Urban Ministry, is a non-profit organization that offers an array of direct supportive initiatives for people being released from incarceration through our reentry programs, employment training for people with barriers to employment through Just Bakery, children and families impacted by the justice system, justice involved youth, as well as recuperative medical respite for families experiencing homelessness. Recognizing that, in the words of Rev. William Sloane Coffin “compassion and justice are companions, not choices,” JustDane also engages in the community advocating for State and local justice system reforms, fair and affordable housing, and end to homelessness and racial and economic justice.

Sharing Our Stories: Appreciative Inquiry Visioning
9:00am — Sept. 18, Oct. 9, Nov. 13 & Dec. 4
We want to hear your voice!
These will be fun and connective visioning sessions with the aim of “sharing our stories” with one another. The appreciative inquiry process is one that allows for the good, the true, the beautiful of our past to be carried forward into the future. The basis of the process is story telling and one-on-one interviews. We will focus on a different question each Sunday once a month. Everyone’s voice matters, so please make a point to join for these 9am sessions on Sunday morning. Here is a look at the themes and questions and the dates to mark in you calendar.
September 18th: Sharing a peak experience of your time at ORUCC where you felt most spiritually alive.
October 9th: What do you value about yourself, about ORUCC, about UCC?
November 13th: What do you think are our core values? When have you felt our core values expressed best?
December 4th: If you woke up from a deep slumber and came to ORUCC in 5 years and everything you dreamed and imagined and visioned came true, what would it be like? What would you see, feel, hear, smell? How would people be meeting? Who would be there?
If you can’t be there for one of the Sundays, we still want to hear from you. We are still working on a virtual option for this process and ways of including voices who cannot make it on Sunday morning for any of these.

PreK-2nd grade students will enjoy music with Julie Mazer at 9:00 in the William Johnson Room and then hear a story with Jill Westberg and Josie Gilbert about how Jesus modeled compassion and care for each other when he was at the Sea of Galilee. Children under the age of 5 are invited to stay as long as they are able and then transfer to the Frances Nursery to play with Lily Martens and Joey Miller.
3rd-5th Grade will continue their Peacemaker exploration in the Ruby Bridges Room at 9 am. Last week, they talked about how peace from God lives in their bodies. This week, they will talk about another important piece of becoming a peacemaker - listening carefully. Through a variety of active stations, they will consider, “How do we listen? How do our bodies hear?” with their Sunday School Guides, Sally Allen and Jadyn Gilbert.
Music Connections (during the 10 o’clock worship hour): This week, children in 2nd-5th+ grade (middle schoolers are welcome to attend as a participant or helper) are invited to drum with Julie Mazer after the “Time for Children.” We’ll also begin to explore the scripture, “Be Still and Know that God is Peace.” Save the date for Sunday, October 23. That day, we’ll share music that we’ve developed on that passage during worship.

9:00 am Children in grades 3-5 will begin their morning in the Ruby Bridges Room with classroom “guides” Paul Vash, Sally Allen, and Jadyn Gilbert. This class will begin with the six week module written by Tammy Martens, “Blessed be the Peacemakers.” Through stories, books, art, reflection, and meditation practices, they will consider peace within themselves, each other, and the world. 8:30 am: Our Whole Lives for Middle Schoolers
Middle school youth learn about in a safe and accepting space about sexuality, how to define their own values, anatomy and physiology, where they can can discuss personal concerns about puberty and body image, gender expression, stereotypes, disability, healthy relationships, redefining abstinence, consent education, and beyond. This is a program and curriculum designed to offer accurate information presented in developmentally appropriate ways as well as:
  • Affective and emotional learning
  • Guiding values and principles
  • Activities that help participants clarify values and improve decision-making skills
  • A safe and supportive peer group
  • Acceptance of diversity
  • A social justice approach to inclusive sexuality education

Music Connections
Our 2022 programming year kicks off on September 11! Music Connections, our music ministry for children in grades 2-6+, meets during the 10 o’clock worship hour in the lower level of the church. Volunteers are needed to assist during this time. Duties include observing, participating, and helping wherever needed. No prior music experience is required. You do not need to be a parent. Volunteers must attend a brief Safe Sanctuary workshop. JustDane (formerly Madison-area Urban Ministry, is a non-profit organization that offers an array of direct supportive initiatives for people being released from incarceration through our reentry programs, employment training for people with barriers to employment through Just Bakery, children and families impacted by the justice system, justice involved youth, as well as recuperative medical respite for families experiencing homelessness. Recognizing that, in the words of Rev. Sermon: Liberating Love by Manuel Ramminger
Manuel Ramminger is a new member of ORUCC. He was born and raised in Gummersbach, Germany. In 2001, he moved to Madison for theological training with Youth With A Mission (YWAM). From 2002-2019 he worked as a full time staff member with YWAM running Bible Schools and providing leadership development for their staff. His work brought him to over 35 nations and he taught workshops and seminars on justice in five continents. His extensive study of Scripture led him to conclusions that were at odds with the predominant views that were widespread in some evangelical churches that were steeped in Christian nationalism and gave Donald Trump the presidency in 2016. This started a process of decolonizing his faith which brought him to Orchard Ridge UCC. He currently works as a missionary with Ethical Trade Company which makes a difference through job creation in areas of poverty, exploitation and human trafficking. He also works as a freelance broadcast tech and Technical Director for a local production company.

The Community Immigration Legal Clinic (CILC) is a Madison-based nonprofit organization that provides legal representation to immigrants facing deportation, free legal clinics, and training and education on immigration issues for the community at large. CILC is housed at Christ Presbyterian Church, 944 East Gorham Street, in Madison. Wisconsin.
CILC provides pro bono services for anyone who presents themselves at their door, asylum seekers, refugees, and people recently released from detention centers. In the past year, referrals to CILC have included people from the border, people from Afghanistan and, most recently, people from Ukraine. In the past two months, referrals for services have doubled.
Funds from the compassion offering will fund an increase of staff for establishment of a pro-se clinic. The pro-se clinic will provide increased access to those seeking information about their rights, assistance in filling out required forms and asylum applications in their native language, and support navigating the immigration court system.

Jim McNamara writes: Jill and I attended the Family Camp at Moon Beach this year which was led by Winton and Tammy Boyd. The focus of the week was on naming; what does our name mean and how do we (and others) see it in the daily in-and-out routines of our lives. One of our exercises during the week was “writing” a poem based on the example of the poem “Where I’m From” by
George Ella Lyon, which I have copied below:
Where I’m From
I am from clothespins,
from Clorox and carbon-tetrachloride.
I am from the dirt under the back porch.
(Black, glistening,
it tasted like beets.)
I am from the forsythia bush
the Dutch elm
whose long-gone limbs I remember
as if they were my own.
I’m from fudge and eyeglasses,
          from Imogene and Alafair.
I’m from the know-it-alls
          and the pass-it-ons,
from Perk up! and Pipe down!
I’m from He restoreth my soul
          with a cottonball lamb
          and ten verses I can say myself.
I’m from Artemus and Billie’s Branch,
fried corn and strong coffee.
From the finger my grandfather lost
 to the auger,
the eye my father shut to keep his sight.
Under my bed was a dress box
spilling old pictures,
a sift of lost faces
to drift beneath my dreams.
I am from those moments–
snapped before I budded —
leaf-fall from the family tree.
We were each given a page with a blank outline for doing our own “Where I’m From” poem and given forty-five minutes to try to complete it. Some did, others didn’t – but we all were very moved by the experience. I thought it might be interesting to look into our own backgrounds and influences and to see what (and where) this could take us. What we found at camp was that even when we completed our poem, there was always the desire to go back and revise or extend it. So, this could be an exercise to keep us interested over our August hiatus from Java and Jesus.

and the eternal scraping of paint
I am from towering elms over the street
whose shade and protection reassure me
I am from the big bad brown teddy bear
and the room full of train tracks

and from constant loving care
from tenacious, obstinate persistence
I am from quiet under the rafters high
I am from Jenny VanCycle and Neil McNamara
from very dead liver and mushy brussel sprouts
from an escape from too many sisters and Ireland
and from valley farms in Idaho and Washington
from long trips in the back of a station wagons
I am from those moments surrounded in love
and always in unfinished completeness.
 
Before our session on July 31st, please write your own poem using this blank poem form, and come prepared to share your poem with the group. If you don’t have a chance to write your own poem, come anyway, and enjoy the poems of others.

Casa Alitas is a non-profit, immigrant welcome center in Tucson, Arizona. The Center provides a warm welcome, food, clothing, shelter for a few days, medical care, assistance in reuniting families who have been separated at the border, and then assistance for these families with transportation to sponsors who await them in the United States.
ORUCC has a hands-on history with Casa Alitas, even though it is miles away. You may remember that we sponsored a wonderfully successful clothing drive in 2021, and are planning another for this August.
Funds from the compassion offering will be used to provide direct services to immigrant families. For example, it will help reunite families who have been separated at the border, to buy plane tickets for people to reach the homes of their sponsors in the United States, and to pay for the food, medical supplies, and shelter provided by Casa Alitas.

The congregation will face Gilbert Rd. so that the paved patio area can be for handicapped seating or used for those who prefer steady ground. We will worship hands free with no bulletins on Sunday morning to really give a relaxed feel. For an outline of the service you may refer to the printable bulletin:

Casa Alitas is a non-profit, immigrant welcome center in Tucson, Arizona. The Center provides a warm welcome, food, clothing, shelter for a few days, medical care, assistance in reuniting families who have been separated at the border, and then assistance for these families with transportation to sponsors who await them in the United States.
ORUCC has a hands-on history with Casa Alitas, even though it is miles away. You may remember that we sponsored a wonderfully successful clothing drive in 2021, and are planning another for this August.
Funds from the compassion offering will be used to provide direct services to immigrant families. For example, it will help reunite families who have been separated at the border, to buy plane tickets for people to reach the homes of their sponsors in the United States, and to pay for the food, medical supplies, and shelter provided by Casa Alitas.

Teacher: Leslie Linser
The class will take place on “The Patio,” the concrete area outside the worship hall, or indoors incase of inclement weather. This is an embodied and contemplative way to enter into worship on our day of Sabbath. Leslie Linser, a member of ORUCC and certified yoga instructor, will teach a yoga class grounded in spirituality with breath and prayer and meditation.
From Leslie: “The style of yoga being offered is best described as a gentle, slow flow. And while this will be slow and gentle it will require the ability to get on and off a mat (the floor). If one is able to get on and off the mat then most poses can be modified to fit your abilities. It is important that you know your own abilities and limitations and consult your physician if you are unsure if this is right for you. Whether you are a beginner or experienced in yoga practice, this class is intended to support you in engaging in gentle movements and in entering into a space of quiet and meditation that all can experience. And if you are an experienced practitioner there will be space and opportunities for more challenging poses.

Ukraine Refugee Relief
In June, the ORUCC Christian Witness and Service Ministry is focusing on refugee relief in and around Ukraine. We are partnering with the UCC-Wisconsin Conference, and its partner, Church World Service and their Ukraine Crisis Response Fund.
 
The Ukraine Crisis Response Fund is addressing the unique needs of Ukrainians displaced by Russia’s invasion. In meeting the basic needs of these refugees, the Fund is providing shelter and distributing food, hygiene items and school supplies.
 
The situation in Ukraine and neighboring countries is unstable and continues to change. Through the Crisis Response Fund, Ukrainians who have been forced to flee from their homes receive warm welcomes to help stabilize their situations.
 
Uniting in prayer, action, and giving, we stand as people of faith in love and compassion with the people of Ukraine.

All pastors (try to) take Monday & Saturday as Sabbath days.
Friday is observed as a writing day for the preaching pastor. In case of pastoral emergency, any of the pastors can be reached by cell phone.
